Chapter 3 - The Interrogations BeginTuesday brought the first formal legal deposition. Because we had filed under expedited emergency family law provisions due to the nature of the psychological duress and immediate abandonment, a mandatory mediation and preliminary hearing was set for Wednesday morning.

I arrived at the courthouse flanked by Chloe and an associate attorney, wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit that mirrored the exact armor Julian used to wear. I looked calm, collected, and entirely unshaken.

Julian and Victoria arrived ten minutes later, accompanied by their high-priced defense attorney, a slick man named Harrison Vance who specialized in silencing uncomfortable truths. Julian looked disheveled. The dark circles under his eyes spoke of a sleepless night spent staring at ceiling fans, realizing that his financial empire was resting on very shaky ground as banks audited his accounts for marital liability.

In the hallway outside the mediation room, Julian spotted me. He started to storm over, his face purple with rage, but my attorney stepped smoothly into his path, blocking him with a wall of calm professional indifference.

"Mr. Sterling," Chloe said crisply, her voice carrying across the marble corridor. "I advise you not to speak to my client without formal counsel present. Every word you utter right now is being recorded for the record."

Julian glared at me over Chloe’s shoulder. His voice shook with suppressed fury. "You think you're clever, don't you? You think you can walk away from my name?"

"I'm not walking away from your name, Julian," I said, stepping past Chloe to look him directly in the eye. "I'm erasing it."

Inside the mediation room, the atmosphere was thick with tension. The mediator, a retired family court judge named Arthur Pendelton, sat at the head of the long oak table, reviewing our initial filings.

"We are here today to determine the immediate dissolution of a fourteen-hour union," Judge Pendelton began, peering over his half-moon spectacles. "Mr. Sterling’s counsel has filed a motion to dismiss, claiming abandonment and seeking full restitution of wedding expenses. However, Mrs. Sterling’s counsel has countersued for immediate annulment based on fraudulent misrepresentation of character, emotional coercion, and psychological duress, backed by physical evidence."

Harrison Vance cleared his throat smoothly, leaning forward. "Your Honor, my client maintains that this is an unfortunate domestic misunderstanding blown out of proportion by a young bride suffering from cold feet. The text messages and social media statements—”

"Mr. Vance," Chloe interrupted smoothly, sliding a thick binder across the table toward the judge. "I direct your attention to Exhibit A through D. These are audio recordings obtained legally under our state's one-party consent laws, captured on the morning of the wedding within the marital home. I’d like to play a thirty-second clip for the court."

Chloe pressed a button on her tablet.

The courtroom speakers crackled to life. Instantly, Julian’s harsh, mocking voice filled the silent room: "You’re not my wife—you’re a maid now. Earn your keep."

Followed immediately by Victoria’s venomous whisper: "You have to set the ground rules from day one. If you don't control her now, she'll walk all over you."

Julian’s face drained of all color. Victoria, who had been sitting quietly in the corner looking indignant, gasped audibly, her hands clutching her pearl necklace.

Judge Pendelton slowly lowered his pen. He looked up from the binder, his expression turning cold and hard as granite. He stared directly at Julian, then at Victoria.

"Mr. Sterling," the judge said softly, the silence in the room deafening. "Do you recognize these voices?"
