Chapter 4: The Financial Web Unravels

As we broke for lunch, Julian cornered me near the vending machines on the lower level of the courthouse. He had managed to ditch his lawyer for a brief moment, and desperation had completely eroded his composure.

"Elena, please," he muttered, his voice cracking. He reached out to grab my wrist, but I stepped back sharply, giving him a look so freezing he flinched. "My dad’s company is tied up in these audits. If the banks freeze our revolving credit lines for another week, we lose the municipal contract. Everything I've built... everything my family has worked for... it’s going to collapse."

"And what did you think would happen, Julian?" I asked quietly, crossing my arms. "Did you think you could trap me in a house, treat me like garbage, and expect me to smile and take it just because you handed me a ring fourteen hours prior?"

"I was stressed!" he blurted out, his mask entirely gone now, exposing the pathetic, weak-willed bully underneath. "Mother told me that’s how you handle women—you show strength right away so they don't get ideas! It wasn't even my idea, it was—"

"Don't blame your mother for your own cruelty," I interrupted, my voice sharp as broken glass. "You chose to throw that rag. You chose to look at me with contempt. You made your bed, Julian. Now lie in it. Or better yet, clean it."

Before he could respond, Chloe and two courthouse security guards rounded the corner, their footsteps echoing on the tile. Julian glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred, realizing that manipulation, intimidation, and charm were completely useless against me. He turned on his heel and stormed away, muttering threats under his breath.

Back in the conference room, Chloe laid out the next phase of our strategy.

"The financial audit is revealing much more than just marital disputes," Chloe said, tapping a financial spreadsheet on the desk. "It turns out Julian’s real estate firm has been operating with dangerously high leverage. He used his upcoming marriage to project financial stability to high-net-worth investors. By filing for an immediate annulment on the grounds of fraudulent intent within twenty-four hours, we've essentially signaled to his investors that his personal life—and by extension, his business ethics—are built on deception."

"How long until the firm folds under this pressure?" I asked.

"If we push for full asset disclosure and freeze his corporate restructuring," Chloe smiled grimly, "about forty-eight hours. His business partners are already looking for a way out. They don't want to partner with a man whose wife walked out on him the morning after wedding bells because he treated her like domestic property."

The trap was closing. And Julian and Victoria had walked into every single part of it willingly.
