Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Number 42By Thursday evening, the story had broken in the local business journals. What started as a private domestic dispute exploded into a public scandal when public records of the emergency hearing—including transcripts of the audio recordings—were legally unsealed by Chloe’s team following Julian’s failed attempts to gag the proceedings.

The headline in the Metro Business Daily read: REAL ESTATE HEIR’S MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR BID JEOPARDIZED AFTER WIFE WALKS OUT FOURTEEN HOURS AFTER WEDDING AMID ALLEGATIONS OF DOMESTIC COERCION.
Social media picked it up within hours. The video of Victoria dropping her watering can outside Number 42 when I announced I was leaving—captured by a neighbor's Ring camera and legally acquired as public context—went viral. Internet sleuths began digging into Julian’s past business dealings, uncovering a trail of arrogant dismissals and questionable vendor contracts.
I was sitting in my hotel suite watching the evening news report when my phone buzzed with an alert from a monitored real estate feed. Number 42—the sprawling suburban mansion where Victoria and Julian lived, and where I had spent precisely fourteen agonizing hours—had just been slapped with an emergency foreclosure notice by its primary commercial lender.
Right on cue, my burner phone rang. This time, it wasn't Julian. It was Victoria.
I pressed accept, not saying a word.
"Elena?" Victoria’s voice wasn't dripping with venom anymore. It sounded small, cracked, and desperate, aged ten years in less than five days. "Elena, please... you have to call off your lawyers. Julian is talking about filing for bankruptcy. Our family name... everything we've built... it’s being dragged through the dirt. People are spitting on our doorstep."
I listened to her plead, feeling neither pity nor anger—only a profound, liberating emptiness where the pain used to be.
"Victoria," I said calmly, my voice steady and clear. "When you told Julian to set the ground rules on day one, did you ever imagine the rules would apply to how the rest of the world treats you?"
"We'll apologize!" she sobbed over the line. "We'll issue a public statement! We'll sign whatever financial relinquishment documents your lawyer wants! Just... please stop this."

"You built your entire life on the belief that you could step on people smaller than you and call it strength," I replied softly. "I didn't destroy your family, Victoria. I simply stopped letting you use me as your welcome mat."
I hung up the phone, walked over to the suite’s floor-to-ceiling window, and watched the distant lights of the city skyline glitter against the twilight sky. I didn't feel broken. I felt whole. I felt invincible.
