Chapter 2 - Shadows of the EstateThe sun dipped below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the manicured lawns of the Whitmore estate. Twilight brought a bitter chill, matching the frost settling deep within Adrian’s chest.

He knew he couldn’t simply march down to the east wing with local police yet. Eleanor had spent decades greasing the wheels of local law enforcement, judges, and city councilmen in Charleston. If he moved prematurely, Eleanor would have Claire moved again, or worse, use her network to have Adrian declared legally unstable.
He needed undeniable digital and physical proof.
Working together with Hannah in the quiet shadows of the servants’ pantry, Adrian formulated a plan. Hannah had access to the master keycards for the service corridors and the digital logs of the estate’s security grid—systems that Eleanor foolishly assumed only she controlled.
“Here,” Hannah whispered, handing him a small, encrypted flash drive. “This contains the master security logs, visitor logs for the east wing over the past three months, and the private surveillance footage your mother tried to scrub from the central server.”
“How did you get this?” Adrian asked, astonished.
“Mrs. Claire trusted me,” Hannah said, wiping a tear from her cheek. “Before she was taken, she gave me the admin override code to the secondary terminal in the basement. She told me that if anything happened to her, someone had to remember the truth.”
Adrian pocketed the flash drive, his jaw set in stone. “Thank you, Hannah. Stay inside your quarters tonight. Lock your door. By tomorrow morning, this house will belong to the people it was actually built for.”
He slipped out through the side terrace doors, blending into the thick darkness of the oak groves surrounding the east wing. The old medical pavilion was a somber, gothic structure of dark brick and ivy-choked window panes. It had been built in the 1940s as a private sanitarium for the family before modern healthcare, but over the years, it had fallen into disuse—or so the public was led to believe.
As Adrian approached the heavy metal service door set into the side of the foundation, he noticed the subtle hum of a modern climate-control unit. The building wasn't abandoned at all. It was active, climate-controlled, and heavily guarded.
Two private security contractors stood near the entrance, smoking cigarettes and laughing quietly in the damp night air.
Adrian crouched behind a dense boxwood hedge, watching their patrol pattern. He needed a distraction, and he needed it now.
Retrieving his phone, he dialed the security gate intercom line directly, setting it to max volume. When the automated system picked up at the front gate, he triggered a prerecorded digital alarm pulse through his phone’s speaker, simulating a perimeter breach near the western stables.
Both guards spun around instantly.
“Did you hear that?” one guard muttered, tossing his cigarette. “Sector four breach. Let’s check it out.”

They jogged away into the darkness.
Adrian didn’t hesitate. He rushed across the gravel path, inserted a master override keycard Hannah had provided into the side panel, and slipped inside the heavy metal door before it clicked shut behind him.
