Chapter 3 - The Locked DoorThe interior of the sub-basement smelled of damp concrete, antiseptic, and old iron. Dim emergency lights cast a sickly yellow glow down the narrow corridor. Pipes hissed overhead, vibrating with the pulse of the massive estate boilers.

Adrian moved quickly, his footsteps silent against the concrete floor. He passed several empty holding rooms with reinforced glass windows—relics of a darker era of family history that Eleanor had repurposed to protect her own iron grip on the family fortune.

At the very end of the corridor stood a heavy steel door equipped with a digital keypad and a thick biometric scanner.

Adrian hurried to the keypad. He remembered the encrypted flash drive Hannah had given him. Pulling a small diagnostic reader from his pocket, he plugged the drive into the emergency maintenance port beside the door.

Executing override... lines of green code flickered across the small LED screen. Access granted.

With a heavy, mechanical clunk, the locking bolts retracted.

Adrian pulled the steel door open and stepped inside.

The room was sparse—a clean, white-walled medical suite equipped with a hospital bed, an IV drip, and a small wooden nightstand holding a stack of water cups.

And sitting on the edge of the bed, wrapped in a thin grey blanket, was Claire.

Her face was pale, her eyes hollow and dark-ringed from weeks of captivity. Her swollen belly was a stark reminder of the life she was carrying under unimaginable duress. When the door opened, she flinched, curling inward defensively.

“Adrian?” she whispered, her voice cracking as though she were speaking for the first time in months.

Adrian dropped to his knees in front of her, tears blurring his vision for the first time in twenty years. He reached out with trembling hands, gently cupping her face.

“Claire... oh, God, Claire,” he choked out, pulling her into his arms.

She collapsed against his chest, sobbing uncontrollably. The weight of weeks of isolation, fear, and psychological torture broke through her defenses.

“She took everything, Adrian,” Claire sobbed against his shoulder, her fingers gripping his shirt. “She said... she said my baby wasn't worthy of the Whitmore name. She threatened to have me committed to a psychiatric asylum if I ever tried to contact you again.”

“It’s over,” Adrian promised, pressing kisses into her hair while holding her tightly. “I’ve got you. You’re safe now. We’re getting out of here tonight.”

Claire pulled back, looking at him with sudden, desperate terror. “We can’t just leave. Your mother has guards everywhere. If she catches us—!”

“She won't catch us,” Adrian said, his voice hard as iron. “Because by the time she wakes up tomorrow, the federal authorities will already have her in custody.”
