Chapter 2 - Cracks in the FacadeThe country club garden had transformed from a celebratory shower into a high-stakes social minefield.

While Ethan casually engaged several prominent Dallas business executives near the bar—men who were practically tripping over themselves to network with a tech billionaire—our four children were behaving like absolute angels. Liam and Noah were happily playing with a wooden train set Ethan had brought along, while Ava and Chloe were charmed by the catering staff, who kept bringing them fruit skewers and organic juice boxes.

Every eye in the venue remained fixed on our family.

Jason was spiraling. He kept downing glass after glass of scotch, his eyes darting frantically between Ethan’s inner circle and the hushed groups of guests who were openly gossiping about his past lies.

I was sitting at a shaded table near the rose garden when Jason’s mother, Eleanor Carter, approached. She had spent five years treating me like an inconvenient houseguest in her son's life, constantly reminding me of the prominent families her friends' sons had married into.

"Olivia," Eleanor said, her voice tight, holding her glass with trembling fingers. She forced a strained, brittle smile. "I must say... you look well."

"I am remarkably well, Eleanor. Thank you," I replied calmly, setting my tea down.

Eleanor glanced at the quads, who were giggling as Ethan lifted Ava onto his shoulders. A flash of raw envy crossed the older woman's face. She had spent years desperate for a grandchild, only to watch her former daughter-in-law produce four stunning heirs for another, far more powerful family.

"I... I had no idea," Eleanor murmured, her eyes glassy. "Jason told us... well, he led us to believe that the issue was entirely yours. He said you refused treatments, that you were too hysterical..."

"Jason lied to protect his own pride, Eleanor," I said directly, looking her dead in the eye without a flicker of fear. "He couldn't handle the thought that he wasn't perfect. So he made me the villain. And you enabled him."

Eleanor opened her mouth to defend herself, but no words came out. The truth was too heavy, too undeniable. She bowed her head, utterly defeated, and retreated back toward the clubhouse.

Before I could enjoy the quiet, a shadow fell across the table.

It was Jason. He was reeking of alcohol, his necktie loosened, his composure completely gone. Ashley was hovering twenty feet away, looking furious and humiliated as her own family tried to comfort her amidst the glaring awkwardness.

"You think you're so smart, don't you?" Jason hissed, keeping his voice low, though his eyes were wild. "You brought him here to humiliate me. You orchestrated this whole thing!"

I looked up at him, feeling a sudden, overwhelming wave of second-hand embarrassment. How had I ever cried over this man? How had I ever allowed his opinion of me to dictate my self-worth?

"I didn't orchestrate anything, Jason," I said coolly. "You sent the invitation. You added the handwritten note, explicitly asking me to come so you could mock me in front of your friends. I simply answered the call. Did you really think I was going to hide in a corner forever?"

"Four kids?" Jason sneered, leaning over the table, his breath sour. "Come on, Olivia. Who are you kidding? You used fertility drugs, didn't you? You paid millions for specialized IVF treatments just so you could parade around like some super-mom!"

Before I could answer, a large, firm hand planted itself squarely on Jason’s shoulder, pulling him back three inches.

Ethan had stepped up behind his chair. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't make a scene. He simply looked down at Jason with the terrifyingly calm demeanor of an apex predator looking at an insect.

"I suggest you step back from my wife, Jason," Ethan said, his tone icy enough to freeze the midsummer heat. "And if you ever speak to her in that tone again, the tiny financial consulting firm you’re trying to build in downtown Dallas will lose every institutional investor it currently relies on by 9:00 AM tomorrow."

Jason went rigid. "You... you can't do that."

"Try me," Ethan replied smoothly. "I own twenty-two percent of your primary equity backer, Vance Capital. One phone call from me to Richard Vance, and your credit lines vanish before the sun sets. Do not test my patience today, little man. You invited us to a party. Be a good host, or be ruined."

Jason looked from Ethan’s ruthless, unwavering gaze to my calm, unbothered expression. For the first time in his life, Jason realized the terrifying extent of his powerlessness. He had picked a fight with a lion thinking he was dealing with a wounded lamb.

Without another word, Jason turned on his heel and stumbled away toward the country club bar, leaving his pregnant wife standing alone amidst the quiet wreckage of their celebration.
