Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of CardsThree weeks after the baby shower, the reverberations of that fateful afternoon reached their inevitable, explosive climax.

I was sitting in the sunroom of our home in Austin, drinking coffee while watching the quads play in the sprawling, fenced backyard. Ethan was sitting beside me, reviewing financial reports on his tablet, when his phone buzzed.

He picked it up, glanced at the screen, and chuckled softly.

"What is it?" I asked, looking over.

"Richard Vance from Vance Capital just called," Ethan said, a satisfied smirk touching his lips. "It seems Jason’s financial consulting firm suffered a catastrophic blow this morning."

I set my coffee cup down. "What happened?"

"After the baby shower, Jason’s behavior at work became increasingly erratic," Ethan explained. "He started drinking during business hours, shouting at clients, and making reckless trades. Yesterday, one of his primary investors conducted a routine audit and discovered Jason had been doctoring financial statements to hide massive losses."

I gasped. "He was committing fraud?"

"Desperate men do desperate things, my love," Ethan said gently. "He was trying so hard to project an image of immense wealth and success to compete with what he saw at the shower that he took illegal shortcuts. Vance Capital pulled all their funding an hour ago. Jason’s firm is bankrupt, and the SEC has just opened a formal investigation into his accounting practices."

Before I could digest the news, my own phone buzzed with a text message from Marcus.

I opened it. The text read:

“It’s over, Olivia. Ashley packed her bags this morning. She admitted the baby isn't Jason's after he demanded a paternity test last night during a massive argument. It belongs to her ex. She’s moving back to Florida. Jason lost his house, his firm, his wife, and his reputation in less than twenty-four hours. My mother is in tears, but for the first time in my life, I feel like justice was served.”

I stared at the screen for a long, quiet moment.

There was no rush of malicious joy. There was no wild celebration in my heart. Only a profound, deep sense of peace.

Jason had set out to build a fortress of cruelty, using my pain as the foundation. He had tried to humiliate me, to strip me of my dignity, and to make the world believe I was worthless. But in his relentless pursuit of my destruction, he had exposed his own lies and brought down his own house of cards.

Ethan reached across the table, taking my hand in his. His thumb gently rubbed the back of my palm.

"Are you okay, Olivia?" he asked softly, his eyes filled with genuine concern.

I looked out the window at the backyard.

Liam was trying to help Chloe climb onto the low wooden swing. Noah was enthusiastically showing Ava a butterfly he had found on a flower. Their laughter rang out across the green grass—bright, pure, and untainted by the shadows of the past.

I turned back to Ethan, looking at the man who had seen my broken pieces and loved me back to life, the man who had given me everything I had ever dreamed of and more.

"I am more than okay, Ethan," I said, a deep, genuine smile radiating across my face. "I'm finally free."
