Chapter 3 - Unraveling TruthsBy late afternoon, the baby shower had descended into absolute chaos, though not a single word had been raised in anger publicly. The atmosphere was thick with tension, and guests were making polite excuses to leave early, unable to endure the suffocating awkwardness between the hosts.

Ashley stood near the gift table, opening presents with forced enthusiasm, but nobody was paying attention to her. Everyone was watching Ethan and me, or trying to catch a glimpse of our children.
That was when Marcus, Jason’s younger brother, approached our table. Unlike the rest of his family, Marcus had always been relatively kind to me during my marriage to Jason, though he had been too weak to stand up to his brother's aggressive personality.
"Olivia," Marcus said softly, holding two glasses of sparkling water. "Mind if I sit for a minute?"
I gestured to the empty chair. "Of course, Marcus."
Marcus sat down, looking down at his hands with deep embarrassment. "I just wanted to apologize. For my brother. For my mother. For... everything. I was there the day Jason wrote that note on your invitation. I told him it was a terrible, cruel idea. But he wouldn't listen."
"I know, Marcus," I said gently. "Jason only listens to the echo of his own voice."
Marcus sighed, leaning in closer. "You know... there's something you don't know, Olivia. Something Jason hid from you during the divorce."
I raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
Marcus hesitated, looking over his shoulder to ensure his brother was still drowning his sorrows at the bar.
"Six months before Jason asked you for a divorce," Marcus whispered, "he went to a private fertility clinic in Houston. On his own. He wanted to get tested secretly because he was paranoid that the issue might be him."
My heart skipped a beat. "What?"
"The test results came back," Marcus revealed, his eyes filled with grim satisfaction. "Jason had an extremely low sperm count and severe motility issues. The doctor told him that while it wasn't mathematically impossible for him to father a child, the odds were incredibly low without extensive medical intervention."
I stared at Marcus in utter disbelief. "He knew? He knew he had fertility issues?"
"Yes," Marcus said bitterly. "But Jason’s pride couldn't accept it. He was terrified that if the truth came out, his friends and colleagues would look down on him. So he hid the report. He threw it away, doubled down on blaming you, and forced you to take those agonizing hormone shots for months knowing full well that he was the primary reason you weren't conceiving."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes—not of sadness, but of pure, unadulterated outrage. The months I had spent weeping in the bathroom, staring at single lines on pregnancy tests, believing my body was broken, feeling like a complete failure as a woman... all while Jason stood over me, calling me inadequate. He had known the truth the entire time.
"Why didn't he tell Ashley?" I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
"Because he didn't have to," Marcus scoffed softly. "Ashley got pregnant three months after they got married. Jason bragged to the whole family that it proved he was fine and you were the problem."
"Wait," Ethan interrupted, his sharp eyes narrowing as he joined our conversation, holding two fresh juices for the kids. "If Jason’s medical condition was that severe... how did Ashley get pregnant so quickly?"
Marcus swallowed hard, exchanging a long, heavy look with Ethan.
"Let's just say," Marcus muttered under his breath, "Ashley was seeing her ex-fiancé right up until the week she and Jason announced their engagement. Half the family suspects the baby isn't even Jason's, but Jason is so desperate to prove his virility to the world that he refuses to get a DNA test."
I let out a breathy, breathless laugh. The irony was so profound, so poetically brutal, that it felt like a script written by cosmic justice itself.
Jason had discarded me, tormented me, and publicly slandered me to protect his fragile ego—only to end up raising another man's child just to keep up a lie he created.

"Thank you for telling me, Marcus," I said quietly.
"You deserved the truth a long time ago, Olivia," Marcus said, standing up. "I'm just glad you found someone who actually deserves you."
