Chapter 2 - The Shadow’s ProtectionThe private office on the third floor of Vincenzo’s was a world away from the busy restaurant below. Deep mahogany paneling lined the walls, framed by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with leather-bound volumes. A massive marble fireplace crackled softly, casting a warm golden glow across a plush leather sofa and an ornate executive desk.

Olivia sat on the edge of the sofa, a velvet-wrapped ice pack pressed against her bruised wrist. The shock was finally beginning to wear off, leaving behind a profound, hollow exhaustion. Her body shook with residual adrenaline.

Vanessa sat beside her, holding a crystal glass of amber wine. "Drink a little bit, Liv. It’ll help the trembling."

Olivia took a small sip. The wine was smooth, warm, and rich, but she could barely taste it. "Vanessa... who is he really? Robert always said the owner was just a silent investor."

Vanessa sighed, leaning back against the cushion. "Julian Moretti isn't just an investor. He owns this building, the block it stands on, and half the import docks in the city. People call him a businessman, but around here... well, you don't cross the Moretti family if you value your breathing."

Before Olivia could ask anything more, the heavy oak door opened.

Julian stepped into the room. He had discarded his dark suit jacket, revealing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing dark, intricate tattoos that crept up from his wrists. He carried an air of absolute authority, yet as his eyes locked onto Olivia, his expression softened instantly.

"Leave us for a moment, Vanessa," Julian said quietly.

"Of course, Mr. Moretti," Vanessa nodded, giving Olivia’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze before slipping out and closing the heavy door behind her.

Julian walked over to the fireplace, standing near the hearth for a moment before turning to face Olivia. He didn't approach her aggressively; he kept a respectful distance, allowing her to process his presence.

"How is your wrist?" he asked, his voice low and soothing.

"It... it hurts a little, but I'm fine," Olivia whispered. She looked down at her lap, suddenly feeling self-conscious in her server’s apron. "Mr. Moretti, I am so sorry for what happened downstairs. I didn't mean to bring my personal problems into your restaurant. I can hand in my resignation tonight—"

"Resignation?" Julian interrupted, taking two deliberate steps toward her. His dark brows furrowed. "Why would you resign?"

"Because I caused a scene. I embarrassed the restaurant, I disrupted your guests—"

"Stop," Julian commanded gently, pulling a leather armchair closer to the sofa and sitting down across from her. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, bringing his face level with hers. "You did not cause a scene. A coward put his hands on you in my house. That is not your fault, Olivia."

Hearing him say her name with such warmth sent a strange shiver down her spine. "You know my name?"

A faint, subtle smile touched the corner of Julian’s lips. "I know everything that happens in my establishments. I’ve watched you work for the past six months, Olivia. You are hardworking, graceful, and remarkably kind to people who often don't deserve it."

Olivia blinked, stunned. "You’ve been watching me?"

"Not in the way that monster was," Julian said, his voice darkening as he mentioned Tyler. "I observed a woman who carried a heavy burden on her shoulders every single day, yet never allowed it to tarnish her dignity."

He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a clean, linen handkerchief, handing it to her. Olivia realized she had a stray tear on her cheek and wiped it away quickly.

"Who was he?" Julian asked quietly.

Olivia swallowed hard. "His name is Tyler Morrison. We... we dated for two years. At first he was sweet, but then he became controlling. He wanted to know where I was every second. He tried to stop me from going to school, from working... When I finally left him three months ago, he started stalking me. Calling me dozens of times a day. Showing up outside my apartment. I thought if I ignored him, he’d eventually move on."

Julian’s jaw tightened. The anger in his eyes was cold and dangerous, though he kept his voice entirely controlled for her sake. "Men like him do not move on, Olivia. They escalate. If my men had not intervened tonight, what would he have done?"

Olivia lowered her head, unable to answer. Deep down, she knew the truth. Tyler would have dragged her into his car. He would have screamed at her, locked her in his apartment, and punished her for leaving.

"He will not touch you again," Julian stated flatly. It wasn't a reassurance; it was a cold, absolute fact.

"Mr. Moretti... what did your men do to him?" Olivia asked nervously, remembering the two terrifying men who had dragged Tyler away. "I don't want you to get into trouble because of me. Tyler's family has money, and he always threatens to use lawyers—"

Julian let out a low, dark laugh that vibrated in his chest. "Lawyers do not concern me, Olivia. And as for Tyler... my men simply delivered him to the local precinct with a very detailed file regarding his stalking activities, along with a personal note from my legal team. By tomorrow morning, he will be facing formal harassment charges, and a permanent restraining order will be filed."

Olivia looked up, her eyes wide with disbelief. "You... you sent him to the police?"

"Of course," Julian said, his eyes twinkling with a dangerous amusement. "Did you think I was going to bury him in the harbor?"

Olivia felt a sudden, unexpected bubble of laughter escape her lips—a mixture of immense relief and sheer shock. "I... I wasn't sure."

Julian smiled fully then, and the transformation was breathtaking. The intimidating, ruthless figure vanished, replaced by a devastatingly handsome man with warmth dancing in his dark eyes.

"I am a businessman, Olivia," Julian said smoothly. "Though I admit, the urge to throw him into the river was strong when I saw him lay his hands on you."

The sincerity in his voice made Olivia’s breath catch. She looked at him—this powerful, terrifying man who had stepped between her and her nightmare without hesitation.

"Why did you help me?" she asked softly. "You don't even know me."

Julian stood up slowly, stepping closer to her. He extended his hand to her. After a brief pause, Olivia placed her small hand in his. His skin was warm, his grip strong yet remarkably gentle. He lifted her hand slightly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her core melt.

"Because a jewel like you does not belong in the hands of a weak man who tries to break it," Julian said low. "You have spent two years being afraid, Olivia. Under my protection, you will never have to be afraid again."
