Chapter 3 - The Trial of Blood and Honor

Three days later, the rain had turned into a thick, gloomy fog that blanketed the shores of Lake Michigan.
Adeline sat in the glass conservatory on the second floor, wearing a simple emerald-green wool dress that Nonna Sofia had personally selected for her. The old matriarch sat across from her, holding Adeline’s bandaged hand in her own, sipping tea from the very porcelain set Adeline had saved.
“He hasn't slept in two days, child,” Nonna Sofia said gently, her eyes twinkling with ancient wisdom. “Enzo acts like a lion guarding his territory, but really, he is guarding you.”
Adeline flushed, looking down at her lap. “He’s only protecting a witness, Nonna.”
“My grandson does not give his personal coat to a witness,” the old woman chuckled. “He hasn't given anyone a piece of his warmth since his parents died fifteen years ago.”
Before Adeline could process the matriarch’s words, the sudden sound of screeching tires echoed from the front driveway.
Down below, four black sedans bearing government insignias tore through the iron gates of the estate, followed by two tactical vans. Federal agents and corrupt city police officers, mobilized by Senator Ashford’s political influence, spilled out onto the gravel driveway with weapons drawn.
Enzo stepped out onto the front portico, flanked by Luca and ten heavily armed Marchetti guards. He showed no fear, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tailored trousers.
Assistant District Attorney Vance, a known puppet on Senator Ashford’s payroll, stepped forward with a signed warrant.
“Enzo Marchetti!” Vance shouted through a bullhorn. “We have a warrant for the search of these premises and an arrest warrant for you on charges of unlawful confinement and kidnapping!”
Enzo didn't flinch. “Whom am I supposed to have kidnapped, Vance?”
“Adeline Croft!” Vance declared. “Her family reported her missing. Senator Ashford has provided evidence that you are holding her against her will to silence her regarding an assault on your grounds!”
A cold, dangerous smirk touched Enzo’s lips. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply turned his head toward the grand balcony above the entrance.
Adeline walked out onto the marble balcony, her emerald dress fluttering in the damp lake breeze. She looked down at the armada of police cars and federal agents without a single flicker of fear.
“Miss Croft!” Vance yelled, pointing at her. “Step away from the ledge! We are here to rescue you from the Marchetti syndicate!”
Adeline stepped up to the stone balustrade, her clear, strong voice cutting through the fog.
“I am not a captive!” she declared, her words echoing across the courtyard. “I am a guest of Mr. Marchetti! Senator Ashford is lying to cover up his daughter’s attempt to murder Nonna Sofia Marchetti with a controlled chemical substance!”
Vance’s face paled. “Miss Croft, you are under immense pressure—”
“I have already sent a sworn affidavit and the certified lab report of the poisoned tea to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Washington!” Adeline continued boldly. “If you step one foot closer to this house, District Attorney Vance, you will be arrested as an accomplice to attempted murder!”
The police officers behind Vance began looking at one another nervously, lowering their sidearms. Vance cursed under his breath, realizing the trap had failed completely. With a furious glare at Enzo, the corrupt attorney ordered his men to fall back and retreat.
Enzo walked up the grand staircase to the balcony, stopping right behind Adeline. He looked down at her with an expression of fierce, unadulterated admiration.
“You filed an affidavit with Washington?” Enzo asked quietly.
“I asked Luca to help me contact the federal prosecutor yesterday,” Adeline admitted, turning to face him. “I told you, Mr. Marchetti... I’m not a helpless victim.”
Enzo reached out, his long fingers gently cupping the side of her neck, his thumb brushing across her cheekbone. The heat of his hand made Adeline’s breath catch in her throat.

“No, Adeline,” Enzo whispered, his dark eyes burning with a passion he could no longer suppress. “You are the strongest woman I have ever met.”
He leaned in and kissed her—a deep, protective, breathtaking kiss that sealed an unspoken vow between them amidst the cold Chicago mist.
