Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Ashfords

Grain Silo 4 was a towering, rusted monument to Chicago’s industrial past, standing at the edge of the freezing, dark waters of the Chicago River.
Inside the cavernous bottom floor, Adeline was bound to a heavy wooden chair, her lip split and bleeding. Standing over her was Camilla Ashford, holding the very same leather riding crop she had used at the gala, her eyes wild with unhinged jealousy.
“You ruined everything!” Camilla shrieked, striking the wooden armrest inches from Adeline’s hand. “I was supposed to be the Queen of Chicago! I was supposed to have the Marchetti fortune! And Enzo threw me away for a pathetic servant!”
“Enzo threw you away because you are a monster, Camilla,” Adeline spat back, looking her straight in the eye despite the fear gnawing at her stomach. “He never loved you. He only tolerated you.”
Camilla raised the crop to strike Adeline’s face, but Senator Ashford caught his daughter’s arm.
“Save it, Camilla,” Ashford warned, nervously checking his watch. “Falcone’s men are positioned on the roof. Marchetti will be here in five minutes. Once he signs the transfer papers, we eliminate them both.”
Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of the silo didn't just open—they were torn off their hinges as an armored tactical transport smashed through the entrance.
The deafening roar of automatic gunfire erupted across the warehouse.
Falcone’s gunmen on the upper gantries were taken down instantly by Marchetti snipers positioned on the surrounding roofs. Enzo stepped through the cloud of dust and twisted metal, wearing his dark tactical vest, a heavy pistol held in his hand.
“Enzo!” Camilla screamed in terror, shrinking behind her father.
Don Falcone grabbed Adeline, pulling a snub-nosed revolver and pressing it against her temple. “Step back, Marchetti! Or I put a bullet in her brain right now!”
Enzo stopped twenty feet away. His expression was utterly devoid of mercy.
“You’re outmatched, Victor,” Enzo said calmly. “Look around you.”
Red laser sights suddenly dotted Falcone’s chest, his forehead, and his shoulders. Through the broken windows of the silo, the spotlights of three federal law enforcement helicopters illuminated the interior, blinding the remaining captors.
“Drop your weapons!” a voice boomed from the helicopters. “This is the FBI!”
It turned out Enzo hadn't just brought his syndicate; he had brought the Federal Bureau of Investigation, providing them with the exact GPS coordinates and the master ledger of Falcone’s and Ashford’s illegal operations that Adeline’s affidavit had unlocked.
In a fit of panicked madness, Camilla grabbed a dropped gun from the floor and aimed it directly at Enzo.
“If I can’t have you, no one will!” she shrieked.
Adeline didn't hesitate. Using every ounce of strength left in her body, she threw herself forward, knocking the chair over into Camilla’s legs. The gun went off, the bullet splintering harmlessly into the concrete ceiling.
Enzo moved with blinding speed. He closed the distance, disarming Falcone with a brutal blow to the wrist and throwing the rival boss to the floor, where federal agents swarmed him.
Enzo didn't care about Falcone or Ashford as they were pinned to the ground in handcuffs. He dropped to his knees beside Adeline, cutting her ropes with a swift flick of a blade.
He pulled her into his chest, holding her so tightly she could feel the thunderous beating of his heart against his ribs.
“I have you,” Enzo breathed into her hair, his voice raw with overwhelming relief. “I’m sorry it took me so long. I have you, Adeline.”
May you like
Adeline buried her face in his shoulder, her tears soaking his tactical vest. “I knew you’d come for me.”
As Senator Ashford and Camilla were dragged out toward the federal transport vans in chains—their political influence gone, their names ruined, and decades of prison time awaiting them—Enzo lifted Adeline into his arms, carrying her out of the dark silo into the cool, clear night air.
