Chapter 6 - A Crown of Roses

Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the Marchetti estate.

The dark clouds that had hung over the family for years had completely parted. The Falcone syndicate was dismantled, Senator Ashford and Camilla were serving long federal prison sentences, and the Marchetti empire had transitioned into legitimate, highly profitable international shipping and philanthropic ventures under Enzo’s command.

The grand ballroom—the very same room where Adeline had once stood bleeding under a riding crop—was unrecognizable.

Thousands of white roses draped from the crystal chandeliers. Light flooded through the polished windows, reflecting off marble floors that sparkled like diamonds. Two hundred guests filled the room once more—not corrupt politicians and ruthless mobsters, but genuine friends, business allies, and community leaders.

At the front of the altar stood Nonna Sofia, wearing a magnificent navy silk gown, wiping a joyful tear from her eye.

The heavy double doors swung open.

Adeline walked down the aisle on the arm of Dr. Mercer, who had fondly taken on the role of her guardian. She wore an exquisite lace wedding gown with a flowing veil, her skin radiant, her hazel eyes fixed entirely on the man standing at the altar.

Enzo stood waiting for her in a dark bespoke tuxedo. The terrifying mafia boss who had once ruled Chicago through fear now looked at his bride with an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion.

When Dr. Mercer placed Adeline’s hand in Enzo’s, Enzo leaned down and whispered, “You are the most beautiful sight in the world.”

“You’re not so bad yourself, Mr. Marchetti,” Adeline teased softly.

The ceremony was brief, heartfelt, and sacred. When the priest pronounced them husband and wife, Enzo didn't wait—he pulled Adeline into his arms and kissed her deeply, drawing a roaring applause from the entire ballroom.

Later that evening, as the reception hummed with music, laughter, and celebration, Enzo led Adeline out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking Lake Michigan.

A cool autumn breeze swept off the water, making Adeline shiver slightly in her strapless gown.

Without a word, Enzo slipped off his black tuxedo jacket. He stepped behind her and placed it carefully over her shoulders, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close against his chest.

Adeline laughed softly, clutching the lapels of his heavy coat—just as she had six months ago in the marble corridor.

“You always do this,” she murmured, leaning her head back against his shoulder.

“I told you once that a Marchetti always repays his debts,” Enzo whispered into her ear, his breath warm against her skin. “You saved my family, Adeline. You gave me a heart. Everything I own, everything I am, belongs to you.”

Adeline turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck, looking up into the dark eyes of the man who had become her protector, her partner, and her greatest love.

“Then keep me warm, Enzo,” she smiled softly. “For the rest of our lives.”

And under the starry Chicago sky, surrounded by the warmth of a love built on courage and honor, the feared boss kissed his queen, sealing a future that no darkness could ever touch again.
