Chapter 4 - Whispers in the White Room

Three weeks passed like a slow-burning fuse across Baltimore.
Under Damon Kesler’s iron fist, the underworld underwent a violent purge. Anyone associated with corruption, extortion, or the mistreatment of the vulnerable was systematically dismantled. The vendors at the northern market received their restitution tenfold, complete with new storefronts and permanent protection backed by the Kesler syndicate. The name Damon Kesler went from being whispered in pure terror to spoken with a complex, grudging respect—a feared king who had finally remembered his crown had a duty to protect his people.
At the clifftop estate overlooking the northern bay, life was beginning to take on a warm, unfamiliar rhythm.
Rosie sat on a wide teakwood porch swing wrapped in a cashmere shawl, watching the late afternoon sun melt into the blue expanse of the ocean. Her bruises had faded to faint yellow shadows, and the color had returned to her cheeks.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind her.
Micah came running around the corner of the house, laughing as he chased a golden retriever puppy that Damon had bought him the week before. “Mom! Look! Buster caught the ball!”
Rosie laughed—a light, musical sound that she hadn’t heard from herself in years. She knelt down as the boy barreled into her arms, burying his face in her neck.
“I see him, sweetie,” she smiled, kissing the top of his dark hair. “Why don’t you and Buster go see if Martha has any of those lemon cookies ready in the kitchen?”
“Yay! Cookies!” Micah shouted, sprinting off toward the back doors with the puppy yipping at his heels.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around Rosie’s waist from behind, pulling her gently back against a solid, warm chest. A chin rested softly on her shoulder.
“You spoil him,” Damon murmured, his deep voice vibrating against her spine.
“He deserves to be spoiled after the childhood we gave him,” Rosie replied softly, leaning back into his embrace, letting her hands rest over his arms.
“The childhood they tried to steal from us,” Damon corrected gently, turning her in his arms so he could look down into her face. He cupped her cheek with calloused, tender fingers. “We can’t get those six years back, Rosie. I know that. But I swear to you, every single day left in my life will be dedicated to making sure you and Micah never know a single moment of cold or fear again.”

Rosie looked up at him, her heart swelling with an emotion so deep it felt like it might burst. “You already gave us the world back, Damon. You don't have to prove anything else to me.”
“I’m not proving anything to you,” Damon smiled faintly, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead. “I’m reminding myself of how close I came to losing everything that mattered.”
