Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

While peace settled over the clifftop estate, miles away in the damp, isolated stone gatehouse of the Appalachian retreat, the remnants of the Kesler empire’s old guard were facing their own private reckoning.

Eleanor Kesler sat by a small, unadorned wooden table, staring blankly at the iron bars of the small window. The luxury she had known her entire life—the silk dresses, the private jets, the servants bowing at her word—was gone, replaced by gray walls, cold stone, and absolute silence.

Priscilla sat on the edge of a narrow cot across the room, sobbing hysterically into a stained pillow, her manicured fingernails chipped and broken.

“He can’t do this!” Priscilla shrieked for the hundredth time that week. “We’re socialites! We belong at the top! How can he throw us away for a maid and a bastard brat?!”

Eleanor did not look at her. Her voice, when it finally cut through the silence, was as cold and dry as winter dust.

“Be quiet, Priscilla,” Eleanor said, her eyes fixed on the distant tree line. “We didn’t lose because of the girl.”

Priscilla sniffled, wiping her ruined makeup with the back of her hand. “Then why did we lose?”

“We lost because we forgot the foundational rule of power,” Eleanor said quietly, her gaze distant. “A true king doesn't rule by stepping on his people. He rules by protecting them. Damon finally remembered who he was... and in doing so, he destroyed us completely.”

A heavy knock echoed on the iron-reinforced door of the gatehouse.

Neither woman answered. They knew there was no rescue coming. There was only the quiet, unrelenting weight of a kingdom that had outgrown its tyrants.
