Chapter 6 - The Light After the Storm

Six months later, the Bennett-Kesler Foundation for Single Mothers and Displaced Families officially opened its doors in downtown Baltimore.
The grand opening was a quiet affair, unmarred by the loud press conferences Damon usually avoided. Instead, it was attended by local vendors, working mothers, and children playing happily in a sunlit courtyard filled with flowers.
At the center of the courtyard stood Rosie, wearing a simple cream-colored sundress, her brown hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She held a small pair of ceremonial golden scissors, ready to cut the ribbon across the main entrance.
Beside her stood Damon, wearing a relaxed linen shirt, his hand resting comfortably on the small of her back. A few feet away, Micah was chasing the golden retriever across the grass, his laughter ringing out clear and bright into the afternoon air.
Damon leaned down, his lips brushing Rosie’s ear. “Are you ready, Madam Chairwoman?”
Rosie turned her head, a radiant, confident smile illuminating her face—a smile completely free of fear, shadows, or hesitation.
“I’ve never been more ready for anything in my life,” she whispered.

She stepped forward, flanked by the man who had torn down an underworld to find her and a son who represented their unbreakable future. With a steady hand, she cut the ribbon, and as the doors swung wide open to welcome those who needed shelter most, the warm summer sunlight flooded the threshold, washing away every ghost of the past.
They had walked through the dark, through rain and blood and calculated cruelty, but they had finally reached the light. And for the first time in their lives, they were truly home.
