Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

An hour later, a heavy, armored transport van—commandeered from one of Dante’s secondary stash houses by a pair of panicked, newly arrived loyal enforcers—was speeding away from the rail yards toward the heart of Manhattan.

Inside the climate-controlled back cabin, Nora sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket, staring blankly at the metal floorboards. Her hands were still shaking—not from the cold anymore, but from the terrifying realization of what she had just done. She had crossed a line. She had stepped out of the shadows of victimhood and into the violent, bloody arena of the underworld.

Dante sat across from her, his wound re-bandaged by a syndicate medic who had arrived with the van. He looked completely composed, though a pale sheen of exhaustion still clung to his skin. He watched Nora with an intensity that made her skin prickle.

"You disobeyed a direct order," Dante said, his voice entirely devoid of anger, carrying instead a strange, heavy curiosity.

"You're a terrible strategist," Nora retorted, her voice trembling slightly as she pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders. "You would have lasted about thirty seconds out there trying to solo a four-man hit squad with a rusted pistol and three stitches holding your stomach together."

Dante let out a low, rumbling chuckle that echoed in the confined space. "You have a sharp tongue, Nora Kane. In my experience, people with sharp tongues don't last long in this city."

"In my experience," she shot back, raising her chin, "people who don't fight back end up forgotten under bridges. I'm done being forgotten."

Dante went quiet. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, studying her as if she were a complex puzzle he was finally starting to solve.

"Victor Calloway wants my seat on the board," Dante said quietly, shifting from personal reflection to cold, tactical reality. "He engineered the hit on my car last night. He thought taking me out on the harbor road would secure his control over the shipping cartels before the annual syndicate summit tomorrow night. But now... word is going to get back to him that I survived. And worse for him, word will get out that a homeless girl pulled me out of the river and helped me wipe out his hit squad."

Nora’s breath caught. "He's going to come after me."

"He's going to come after both of us," Dante corrected, his eyes flashing with a cold, predatory fire. "Which is why you are not going back to that bridge. From this moment on, you stay by my side. In my penthouse. Under my protection."

"I am not your prisoner, Dante," Nora warned, her eyes narrowing. "I didn't save your life just to trade one cage for another."

"You aren't a prisoner," Dante said softly, reaching out to place a heavy, warm hand over her cold fingers. "You're an honored guest. And tomorrow night, at the syndicate summit at the Calloway Tower... we are going to settle accounts once and for all."
