Chapter 5 - The Summit at Calloway Tower

The Calloway Tower loomed over midtown Manhattan like a monolithic obsidian spire, its upper floors piercing the low-hanging winter clouds. Inside the grand penthouse boardroom, thirty of the most powerful capos, syndicate leaders, and financial backers of the eastern underworld sat in tense, suffocating silence around a massive mahogany table.
At the head of the table sat Victor Calloway, his tailored white suit immaculate, a smug, victorious smile playing across his lips as he poured himself a glass of amber scotch.
"Gentlemen," Victor said, his voice echoing smoothly across the polished marble. "As you know, Dante Vance’s vehicle suffered a... catastrophic accident on the harbor road last night. Recovery crews pulled the car from the river, but the body was swept away by the current. Effective immediately, I am assuming temporary control of the shipping lanes and executive assets."
Murmurs rippled through the room. Some capos nodded in agreement, eager for a new, more malleable boss; others looked uneasy, knowing that a power vacuum in the Vance syndicate usually ended in a bloodbath.
"I wouldn't be so quick to measure the drapes, Victor," a cold, resonant voice echoed from the heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom.
Every head in the room snapped around.
The heavy doors swung open slowly. Dante Vance walked into the boardroom, flanked by four armed enforcers, moving with a rigid, absolute authority that commanded the entire space. He wore a crisp, midnight-blue tuxedo that completely concealed the bandages beneath, his dark hair combed back, his ice-blue eyes fixed entirely on Victor.
Beside him, walking with quiet, unyielding poise, was Nora Kane. She had been cleaned, dressed in a sleek, tailored emerald-green silk dress provided by Dante’s private stylists, her hair falling in dark waves around her shoulders. She didn't look like a homeless outcast anymore; she looked like an equal partner stepping onto a battlefield.
Victor Calloway’s face drained of all color. The glass of scotch slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, explosive crack.
"Dante..." Victor stammered, scrambling to his feet, his hands shaking. "You... you were in the river. The car—"
"The car went down, Victor," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave as he walked slowly toward the head of the table. "And someone tried to make sure I couldn't get out. But as it turns out, I have very loyal friends. People who know the value of a life—and the cost of a betrayal."
Victor backed away, his eyes darting wildly toward the exit, only to find the doors blocked by Dante’s guards. "You can't prove anything! This is a coup! The board knows—"
"The board knows nothing," Dante interrupted smoothly, slamming a thick manila folder down onto the mahogany table right in front of Victor. "These are financial wire transfers, encrypted communication logs, and signed confessions from the hit squad you sent to finish me off at the rail yards this morning. You didn't just try to assassinate the head of the syndicate, Victor. You leaked our secure port routes to federal investigators to build your own immunity case."
Gasps erupted around the table. The capos rose from their seats, shouting angrily, pointing accusing fingers at a cornered, sweating Victor.
"It's a lie!" Victor shrieked, lunging forward with a hidden switchblade pulled from his sleeve, aiming straight for Dante’s chest.
Before Dante could even raise his hand, Nora moved with lightning speed. She grabbed a heavy silver water pitcher from the side table and brought it crashing down across Victor’s wrist with a sickening crunch. The knife clattered harmlessly to the floor.
Dante caught Victor by the throat with one massive hand, lifting him half off his feet and slamming him against the glass wall overlooking the glittering Manhattan skyline.
"You're done, Victor," Dante whispered, his voice like the grinding of tectonic plates. "Your empire is gone. Your accounts are frozen. And your life belongs to the river."
May you like
With a flick of his wrist, Dante tossed Victor backward into the arms of two waiting enforcers, who dragged the screaming traitor out of the boardroom without a word.
Silence descended upon the room once more—a heavy, respectful silence. The capos slowly lowered their gazes, one by one nodding in submission to the man who had reclaimed his throne from the very jaws of death.
