Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

Three months later, the spring sun was finally warm enough to melt the last lingering patches of winter snow in Central Park.

Nora Kane stood on the private stone balcony of the Vance penthouse, looking out over the endless expanse of the city she had once fought just to survive in. The wind was soft, carrying the scent of blooming cherry blossoms and fresh rain.

Behind her, the heavy glass door slid open. Soft footsteps approached, and a warm, cashmere coat was gently draped over her shoulders.

Dante stepped up beside her, leaning his forearms against the stone railing. He looked healthier, stronger, the scars of that December night fading into the background of a powerful, rebuilt life.

"The foundation is officially registered," Dante said quietly, his dark eyes warm as he looked at her. "St. Agnes Medical and Community Center. Fully funded, fully staffed, and operating out of a brand-new facility downtown. You start as chief director on Monday."

Nora turned her head, looking at him with a mix of wonder and profound gratitude. "You didn't have to buy a building, Dante."

"I didn't buy a building," he corrected softly, reaching out to take her hand in his. "I invested in an asset that actually matters. This city takes a lot from people, Nora. It chews them up and leaves them in the dark. But every once in a while, it throws someone into your path who reminds you how to be human again."

Nora smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She squeezed his hand back, feeling the solid, unshakeable warmth of a bond forged in freezing water and gunfire.

"And what happens now?" she asked softly.

Dante looked out over the skyline as the morning sun broke through the clouds, bathing the entire city in a brilliant, golden light.

"Now," he said, pulling her just a fraction closer, "we start paying our debts."
