PART 1: THE LOCKED ROOM (Continued & Extended)

The heavy brass lamp felt cold and solid in my hand, a poor weapon against the suffocating dread that filled the hallway. Every step I took toward the guest room felt like walking deeper into a nightmare. The house I had bought to be a sanctuary for my family now felt like a labyrinth of deceit.

I reached the door. The brass handle didn't turn when I first tried it; it was locked from the outside, just like the nursery. My heart hammered against my ribs. Using the edge of a credit card from my pocket, I aggressively worked the simple privacy lock until it clicked.

I pushed the door open.

The room was dimly lit, the heavy velvet curtains drawn shut. On the bed lay a woman, her frame frail and trembling. She looked shockingly like Victoria—the same high cheekbones, the same dark hair—but her face was hollow, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and exhaustion.

"Victoria?" I breathed, my mind spinning.

"No," the woman whispered, her voice cracked and dry. "I'm... I'm Veronica. Her twin sister."

Before I could process this bombshell, a shadow shifted in the corner of the room. A man stepped out, holding a heavy glass vase. It was Julian, my estate’s asset manager—the man I trusted with my finances.

"You shouldn't have come back early, Daniel," Julian said, a sinister smile touching his lips.

An intense struggle ensued. Julian lunged at me, but fueled by pure adrenaline and the desire to protect my children, I dodged his swing and brought the brass lamp down heavily against his shoulder. He stumbled, dropping the vase. I tackled him to the floor, pinning him down just as the distant, beautiful sound of police sirens began to wail down the driveway.

Victoria and Julian had been orchestrating a massive fraud to drain my accounts, using Veronica's identity to forge documents, keeping Veronica captive when she threatened to expose them.
