PART 5: AN UNEXPECTED BOND

A year after the trial, a knock came at our door. It was Veronica.

She had spent the last year in extensive physical and psychological therapy, reclaiming the life her sister had stolen from her. She looked radiant, healthy, and her eyes held a warmth that Vanessa's never truly possessed. She had come to personally thank me for saving her life that day, and to see how the boys were doing.

I was nervous about how the triplets would react to someone who looked exactly like Vanessa. But children are incredibly intuitive.

When Veronica knelt down to their eye level, she didn't possess Vanessa's sharp, rigid posture. She smelled of lavender and vanilla, and her voice was soft and genuinely kind. Jonah walked up to her first, tilting his head. He reached out a tiny hand and touched her cheek.

"You're the nice lady from the room," Jonah said softly.

Veronica's eyes welled with tears. "Yes, sweetie. And I'm so glad you're safe."

Within an hour, Caleb and Liam had dragged her into the living room to show her their Lego castle. Watching them, a strange, beautiful feeling blossomed in my chest. For the first time in two years, the house didn't just feel safe—it felt alive.
