PART 2: THE TANGLED WEB

The police arrived in force, flooding the estate with flashing blue and red lights. Julian was handcuffed on the living room floor, snarling threats, while Victoria was apprehended trying to slip out through the back gardens, her silk robe stained with dirt.

As paramedics treated Elena and gently wheeled Veronica out to an ambulance, a detective named Miller sat me down in the study. My triplets were finally safe, wrapped in blankets in the kitchen, eating ice cream provided by a kind officer, but the horror was far from over.

Detective Miller laid out the initial findings. "Mr. Mercer, Victoria Hale doesn't exist. The woman you got engaged to is actually Vanessa Vance, a convicted con artist wanted in three states for grand larceny and identity theft."

My world fractured. The woman I had loved, the woman I shared a bed with, was a ghost.

Vanessa had found her estranged twin sister, Veronica—a quiet, gentle schoolteacher—and drugged her, bringing her to my estate to use her biometrics and real identity to bypass my high-security financial vaults. Julian, my trusted manager, had been Vanessa's lover and partner-in-crime for years. They had planned to drain my entire vineyard investment fund—nearly forty million dollars—the moment my private plane took off for Sonoma.

I sat in the dark study, staring at the blank television screen, realizing how close I had come to losing absolutely everything: my wealth, my sanity, and most importantly, my boys.
