Chapter 3 - The Sunlit TrapThe morning sun cast long, golden shards of light across the parquet floors of the grand breakfast room. A silver coffee service gleamed under the chandelier, and the smell of freshly baked brioche filled the air.

Evelyn Moretti sat at the head of the table, sipping her coffee with an air of aristocratic grace. She wore a tailored cream-colored knit dress, her silver-streaked hair pinned back in an immaculate chignon. When Vincent walked into the room, she looked up, offering a warm, slightly melancholic smile designed to project maternal concern.
“Good morning, Vincent,” Evelyn said softly, setting her porcelain cup down with a delicate clink. “How is Isabella today? I checked on her before dawn, but she was sleeping so deeply. I’m worried her recovery is plateauing.”
Vincent pulled out his chair opposite her and sat down slowly. He didn't smile. He simply watched her with an unreadable, piercing stare that made Evelyn’s hand pause midway toward the bread basket.
“Isabella is resting,” Vincent said evenly. “Though her lab work from last night showed something fascinating, Evelyn.”
Evelyn’s eyes flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of panic that she masked with an offended frown. “Lab work? Did the visiting nurse run tests without consulting me? Vincent, I told you, her system is delicate. Too many doctors poking and prodding—”
“Dr. Vance found foxglove in her system,” Vincent interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the heavy, crushing weight of a predator cornering its prey.
The dining room went dead silent. The faint sound of wind against the double-paned glass seemed to amplify.
Evelyn’s face drained of color, her immaculate composure cracking like brittle porcelain. She gripped the edge of the mahogany table so tightly her knuckles whitened.
“Foxglove?” Evelyn stammered, her voice rising in defensive outrage. “What absolute nonsense! Are you accusing me of something, Vincent? After I abandoned my own home to come here and nurse my daughter back to health while you were busy with your corporate games?”
“You disabled the nursery camera at 7:30 a.m. yesterday, just like you’ve done every morning for three weeks,” Vincent continued, his voice terrifyingly calm as he pulled his phone from his breast pocket and placed it face-up on the table. He pressed play.
The screen illuminated the polished wood, projecting crisp, high-definition footage of Evelyn standing over Isabella’s bed, forcing the bitter amber liquid down her throat while whispering threats about Vincent’s disapproval.
The audio filled the room, cold and undeniable.
Evelyn stared at the screen, paralyzed. All the color vanished from her cheeks, leaving her looking ancient and haggard under the morning light. The saintly grandmother act dissolved completely, stripping away decades of polite society veneer to reveal the manipulative tyrant underneath.
“You... you had a second camera,” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with sudden, vicious hatred.
“I told you, Evelyn,” Vincent said, leaning forward across the table, his slate-gray eyes locking onto hers. “I built my empire by noticing threats before they strike. You made the fatal mistake of treating my home like your chessboard.”
Evelyn slumped back in her chair, her chest heaving as she realized the trap had snapped shut. But instead of crying or begging for mercy, a twisted, desperate sneer curled her lips.
“And what are you going to do, Vincent?” she hissed, her voice dripping with venom. “Call the police? Arrest your mother-in-law? Imagine the headlines in the Boston papers. ‘Mafia Boss Locks Up Elderly Mother-in-Law.’ It would destroy your reputation, your business partnerships, and break Isabella’s heart completely. She still loves me, you know. No matter what I gave her, she’s my daughter!”

Vincent didn't flinch. He simply smiled—a cold, humorless expression that sent a shiver straight down Evelyn’s spine.
“Who said anything about calling the police?” Vincent replied softly. “You’re going to stay right here in this house, Evelyn. But you’re going to experience firsthand what it feels like to be trapped under someone else’s total control.”
