Chapter 4 - The Tables TurnedFor the next week, the Moretti estate operated under a terrifyingly quiet new regime.

Evelyn was no longer allowed to leave the west wing of the mansion. Her phone, her tablet, and all outside communication lines were confiscated by Vincent’s security detail. The staff had been quietly briefed: Mrs. Moretti was suffering from a severe neurological exhaustion episode and required strict quarantine and medical supervision in her suite.
When Evelyn tried to scream, bang on the locked oak doors, or demand to see Isabella, she was met only with the silent, immovable wall of Marcus and his guards.
Meanwhile, upstairs in the master suite, the transformation was miraculous.
With the toxic foxglove extracts abruptly cut off and replaced by Dr. Vance’s proper intravenous nutrient therapy and cardiac restoratives, Isabella’s color returned within forty-eight hours. The tremors in her hands subsided. The terrifying brain fog lifted, leaving her eyes clear and sharp once more.
On Saturday afternoon, Vincent sat beside the bed, peeling an orange for her while little Luca slept peacefully in his crib nearby.
Isabella propped herself up on her elbows, looking stronger and more vibrant than she had since the day Luca was born. She reached out, her fingers resting warmly over Vincent’s hand.
“Vincent... Evelyn hasn't brought my morning tea in three days,” Isabella said softly, a troubled frown touching her brow. “Every time I ask the nurse, they change the subject. Where is she?”
Vincent set the orange slice down on a porcelain plate and looked at his wife. He had debated how much to tell her, knowing how deeply the betrayal would cut, but he knew secrecy between them was what allowed Evelyn to weave her web in the first place.
“She’s in the guest suite, Isabella,” Vincent said gently, his thumb stroking the back of her hand.
Isabella blinked, confused. “Is she sick?”
“No,” Vincent replied, his voice hardening slightly. “She was poisoning you, Isabella. Slow cardiac glycoside poisoning, administered every morning while she disabled the nursery cameras to keep you weak, dependent, and under her thumb.”
The words hung in the air like falling glass.
Isabella stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. She shook her head fiercely, denial rushing in to shield her from the horrific reality. “No... that’s impossible. She’s my mother. She cooked for me, she cared for me—”
Vincent reached into his pocket, pulled out a secure tablet, and handed it to her. He pressed play on the unedited, high-definition security footage from the hidden camera.
Isabella watched in absolute, shattering silence as the screen displayed her mother’s cruel face, heard the harsh, commanding voice, and witnessed the forced administration of the toxic brew that had nearly stolen her life and her son.
Tears welled up in Isabella’s eyes, spilling over her cheeks in hot, silent trails. All the pieces fell into place—the lingering exhaustion, the fear she couldn't explain, the way her mother smiled while watching her wither away.
She pressed her hands over her face, her shoulders shaking with suppressed sobs.
Vincent wrapped his arms around her, pulling her against his chest, holding her with a fierce, protective strength.
“You’re safe now, bellissima,” Vincent murmured into her hair. “The poison is out of your system. And no one will ever hurt you in this house again.”
May you like
Isabella wiped her eyes, her grief rapidly hardening into a cold, unbreakable resolve. She looked up at her husband, her jaw set with a strength Vincent had always known was there, waiting to be unleashed.
“I want to see her,” Isabella whispered.
