Chapter 3 - The Morning Eviction

The storm had passed by 7:00 a.m., leaving behind a cold, gray fog that hung low over the manicured lawns of Crestview Ridge. Inside the master bedroom of the mansion, Evan Halloway woke up with a pounding headache. He had spent the night shouting at his family’s corporate lawyers, who had frantically assured him that Charles’s little "stunt" with the police wouldn't hold up in court.

Evan pulled on a silk robe, stepping out onto the grand balcony to clear his head. As he looked down the long, winding driveway, his jaw dropped.

Three massive black security SUVs were parked across the lawn. A crew of eight men in tactical black uniforms, bearing the emblem of Vance Security & Asset Management, were actively erecting a high steel perimeter fence around the entire property. Two professional locksmith trucks were parked right by the front steps.

"What the hell is this?" Evan screamed, racing down the stairs in his bare feet.

He threw the front doors open, only to find his mother, Judith, and his sister, Paige, already standing in the foyer, wrapped in expensive coats, shouting at a man holding a clipboard.

"You can't do this! This is a violation of our civil rights!" Judith shrieked, her aristocratic voice cracking with genuine terror. "Raymond! Call the police! Call the sheriff immediately!"

Raymond Halloway stepped out of the study, his face pale as he held his phone to his ear. "The... the police aren't coming, Judith. I called the precinct captain. He told me there’s a federal domestic protection mandate attached to this address. They’ve been ordered to stand down and allow the property owners to execute an administrative lockout."

"Administrative lockout?" Evan roared, stepping up to the lead security officer. "I am the tenant here! You have to give thirty days' notice!"

"Not under an active domestic terrorism and beneficiary endangerment clause, Mr. Halloway," Marcus Vance said, stepping through the front doors, followed by two large men carrying heavy moving crates.

"As of 8:00 a.m., your lease has been formally dissolved. Your personal items—clothing, toiletries, and basic documentation—have been packed into these crates. Your luxury vehicles, which were leased through the Grayson-Heritage corporate fleet account, have already been repossessed from the garage. You have exactly ten minutes to exit the premises before you are arrested for criminal trespass."

Paige stepped forward, her eyes wide with fury. "My jewelry! My designer bags! They’re in my closet! You can't take them!"

"Every item purchased using funds derived from the Grayson-Heritage accounts over the last eighteen months has been flagged as stolen asset collateral," Marcus replied coldly. "They remain inside the house pending a forensic audit. Now, please step outside."

Evan looked out at the front lawn. The neighbors—the very people they had tried to impress with their grand parties—were standing at the edge of their driveways, holding coffee mugs, watching the proud, arrogant Halloway family being systematically thrown onto the wet asphalt in their slippers and robes.

"This isn't over," Evan hissed, his eyes burning with hatred as he looked at Marcus. "We still control Halloway Enterprises. We have a $6 million expansion closing in two hours. By noon, I’ll buy this entire ridge and level this house to the ground!"

"I suggest you hurry then, Evan," Marcus said, checking his watch with a calm, maddening smile. "Traffic downtown is terrible this time of morning."
