Chapter 4 - The Corporate Guillotine

The executive boardroom of the First National Bank was a masterpiece of glass and steel, overlooking the bustling financial district of the city. Raymond and Evan Halloway sat at the long glass table, their expressions tense but filled with a desperate, lingering arrogance. They had managed to change into business suits at a nearby luxury hotel, using a hidden emergency credit card that hadn't been frozen yet.
"The wire transfer codes are loaded, Mr. Halloway," the senior loan officer said, adjusting his glasses as he looked at his laptop screen. "Once we receive the final authorization signature from your majority shareholder group, the $6 million will be released into your development fund."
"Excellent," Raymond said, his hands shaking slightly as he reached for the digital signature pad. "Let’s get this finalized immediately. We have a massive restructuring project to handle today."
"I'm afraid that authorization is invalid, gentlemen," a voice said from the back of the room.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, and I walked in. I wasn't wearing my old coat or carrying my cane today. I wore a perfectly tailored, dark charcoal three-piece suit—the same suit I had worn when I testified before the Senate Committee on Financial Crimes three years ago. Walking beside me were two senior board directors of First National Bank and the district manager of the Internal Revenue Service.
Evan sprang from his chair, his face contorting with rage. "Charles! You have no standing in this boardroom! This is a private commercial transaction between Halloway Enterprises and this bank! Security, remove this man!"
The senior bank director stepped forward, his expression stern. "Sit down, Mr. Halloway. Mr. Grayson has absolute standing here. In fact, he is the primary financial consultant for our bank’s risk management committee."
The loan officer’s screen suddenly flashed bright red, a series of warning messages locking out the interface.
"Mr. Halloway," the director continued,
"An hour ago, the Grayson-Heritage Trust executed its proxy voting rights, which control exactly fifty-two percent of the underlying assets of Halloway Enterprises. Your family doesn't own the majority share; you never did. Your father signed a voting trust agreement six years ago in exchange for our initial capital injection. As of 9:30 a.m. today, Raymond Halloway and Evan Halloway have been formally stripped of all executive authority, voting rights, and corporate status within the company."
Raymond’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He sank back into his chair, looking like a man who had just been struck by lightning.
"You... you can't do that," Evan stammered, his confidence evaporating into pure terror. "The expansion project... the contracts..."
"The expansion project was a front for asset stripping, Evan," I said, stepping up to the table and leaning down, looking him directly in the eye. "We’ve already intercepted the shell entity in the Cayman Islands. The $4.2 million you embezzled has been frozen by federal order. And the $6 million loan you were trying to close today? It’s been canceled. Halloway Enterprises is entering immediate receivership under Claire’s sole management."

Evan looked at his father, then at the bank directors, realizing the absolute finality of the trap. The empire they had used to look down on my daughter, the wealth they had used as a weapon to make her feel small, was never truly theirs. It was an illusion I had allowed them to maintain—until they used it to hurt my child.
"You're fired, Evan," I said softly. "Please leave the building before the federal marshals downstairs have to escort you out in a less dignified manner."
