Chapter 5 - The Trial of Crimson Light

Six months later, the County Superior Court was packed to the doors. The trial of the Halloway family had become the most talked-about corporate and criminal scandal of the year. The media had labeled it "The Mansion Endangerment Fraud," and the public interest was relentless.

Evan, Raymond, Judith, and Paige sat at the defense table. The expensive jewelry, the designer suits, and the smug, untouchable expressions were entirely gone. They looked hollowed out, broken, and deeply impoverished. Without the trust’s funds, they had been forced to rely on a low-tier public defender who looked completely overwhelmed by the mountain of forensic evidence Marcus Vance had compiled.

Claire sat beside me in the front row of the gallery. She looked radiant, her health fully restored, her posture graceful and strong. She wore a simple, elegant navy blue dress—the very dress she had bought for my retirement dinner, the one they had called an "embarrassment." She held her head high, her eyes shining with the absolute confidence of a woman who had found her voice again.

The prosecution’s presentation was an absolute masterpiece of clinical exposure. For three hours, my team presented the high-definition security audio from the night of the storm, the forensic financial logs showing the systematic embezzlement, and the medical reports detailing the physical restraint Evan had used against Claire.

When it was time for sentencing, the judge, a formidable woman named Honorable Brenda Stone, looked down at the defense table with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

"Mr. Evan Halloway," Judge Stone said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a blade.

"You utilized physical violence, psychological isolation, and financial fraud to systematically abuse a woman who trusted you. You and your family lived like royalty off her grandfather's hard work while treating her like a prisoner in her own home. Your arrogance is only surpassed by your profound criminal incompetence."

The judge slammed her gavel down, a sound that cracked through the room like thunder.

"For the charges of grand larceny in the first degree, corporate fraud, felony domestic assault, and unlawful restraint, I sentence you, Evan Halloway, to fourteen years in the state correctional facility without the possibility of parole. Raymond Halloway, for your direct role in the financial embezzlement and conspiracy, you are sentenced to eight years."

Judith and Paige burst into tears as the court officers stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around Evan and Raymond’s wrists. Judith was handed a five-year probation mandate with absolute asset forfeiture, while Paige was ordered to perform two thousand hours of community service and return every single piece of luxury property she had acquired through the trust accounts.

As Evan was led toward the holding cell door, he stopped, turning his head to look at Claire one last time, his eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic plea for mercy.

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't look away. She simply looked at him, raised her hand slightly, and gave him a calm, polite nod of farewell. It wasn't a gesture of anger; it was the ultimate act of closure. He was no longer a monster to her. He was simply an irrelevant, small man heading to a dark room.
