Chapter 3 - The Sky Over Europe

The private Gulfstream G650 sliced through the pitch-black sky at forty thousand feet, racing the sunrise across the Atlantic Ocean.

Inside the leather-trimmed cabin, the air was quiet except for the hum of the twin jet engines. I sat at the mahogany conference table, a glass of thirty-year-old scotch sitting untouched beside a laptop connected to the syndicate’s secure satellite network.

Across from me, Viktor was reviewing tactical readouts of the Grand Hotel Miramare in Milan.

"Don Marcus has fortified the top two floors," Viktor reported, pointing to the 3D layout of the hotel flickering on the screen. "He brought thirty men from the Corsican Mob. They’ve cleared out the civilian guests on the penthouse level under the guise of a private fashion summit."

"And Evelyn?" I asked, staring out the window at the dark clouds below.

"She is in Suite 501. The master penthouse," Viktor said, his voice hesitant again. "Mr. Sterling... our interception team managed to pull the audio logs from the livestream feed that was broadcast to her iPad yesterday."

I turned my head slowly. "Play it."

Viktor hit a key on his keyboard.

The speakers in the cabin hissed with static, followed by the clear, high-pitched laughter of my wife.

"Is she still crying?" Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and casual, accompanied by the clinking of champagne flutes.

"She stopped an hour ago," Marcus’s voice answered. He had that smooth, aristocratic accent our father had spent millions trying to cultivate. "Rachel says the cold basement is working wonders. The child won't be a distraction anymore when we return."

"Good," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a cold, calculating tone I had never heard in six years of marriage. "Vance is such a weak idiot. He spent three hours yesterday trying to fix a wooden train set for her. If he knew who you really were, Marcus, he’d probably cry into his tea."

"He thinks he’s safe in his quiet little life," Marcus laughed. "He has no idea that the moment we sign the asset transfer papers in Milan, his 'investments' become ours. And once the Syndicate recognizes my claim, Vance will suffer a unfortunate... heart attack."

"Just make sure Mia stays with Rachel until it's over," Evelyn added coldly. "I don't want the girl around when Vance dies. It makes things so messy with the estate lawyers."

The audio log clicked off.

The silence inside the airplane cabin was deafening.

I looked down at my hands. The hands that had held Evelyn when she cried over her mother's death. The hands that had built her business from scratch. The hands that had cradled my newborn daughter in the delivery room while I swore a quiet oath to leave the blood of the underworld behind forever.

They hadn't just betrayed me. They had viewed my mercy as weakness. They had viewed my love as vulnerability.

"Mr. Sterling?" Viktor asked quietly, his hand resting near his sidearm. "We cross into Italian airspace in twenty minutes. The Milanese authorities have already been bribed by Don Marcus to ignore any disturbances at the hotel tonight."

I picked up the glass of scotch, took a slow sip, and set it back down.

"Contact Don Carmine in Rome," I said softly.

Viktor’s eyes widened slightly. Don Carmine was the elderly head of the Italian Commission—the supreme council of European syndicates. He had been a close ally of my father, but he had remained neutral during my conflict with Marcus five years ago.

"What shall I tell Don Carmine, sir?"

"Tell him Vance Sterling is breaking his retirement," I said, looking straight into Viktor’s eyes. "Tell him I am offering fifty percent of Marcus’s European operations to whichever family shuts down the airspace over Milan for the next six hours."

"And the Italian police?"

"Tell them if a single red light flashes within two miles of the Miramare Hotel tonight, I will release the offshore ledger files of every politician in the Italian Ministry of Justice."

Viktor smiled—a terrifying, sharp expression. "Understood, Boss."

I leaned back in my leather seat, looking at the time on my watch.

May you like

4:15 AM European time.

"Get the weapons ready, Viktor," I whispered. "It’s time to show my wife what happens when the watchmaker stops the clock."
