Chapter 4 - The Miramare Heist

The Grand Hotel Miramare was a masterpiece of 19th-century Italian architecture, featuring soaring marble arches, gilded balconies, and crystal chandeliers that hung like frozen waterfalls over the grand lobby.
At 5:00 AM, the street outside was silent. Fog rolled off the cobblestones of Milan, wrapping the building in a ghost-white shroud.
Inside the penthouse suite, the air was warm, smelling of expensive perfume, Cuban cigars, and vintage cognac.
Evelyn Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the foggy city, wearing a silk emerald-green evening gown. She held a glass of champagne, her diamond necklace sparkling under the recessed lighting.
Across the room, Marcus Vance sat in a leather armchair, an iPad resting on his lap. He was a handsome man, with slicked-back dark hair and sharp, predatory eyes that matched mine—except his were filled with an arrogant, reckless heat.
"Rachel hasn't called in two hours," Evelyn said, her brow furrowing slightly as she took a sip of champagne. "She was supposed to send a confirmation video of Vance leaving for his morning walk."
Marcus didn't look up from his screen. "Relax, my sweet. Rachel is probably sleeping off the wine. Vance is an unemployed house-husband who repairs pocket watches. What do you think he’s going to do? Fight her?"
"I don't know," Evelyn murmured, turning around to face him. "Something felt strange before I left Chicago. He looked at me differently last week. When I told him I needed another fifty thousand for the Milan showcase, he didn't argue, he just... looked at me."
"He looked at you because he’s terrified of losing you," Marcus sneered, setting the iPad down. "He knows he’s a nobody living off your shadow. Once the legal team files the power-of-attorney documents tomorrow morning, all of 'his' inherited trust accounts will be transferred to our offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. He’ll be left with nothing. Not even the house."
Evelyn smiled, though a tiny flicker of unease still danced in her eyes. "And Mia?"
"Rachel will keep her at the suburban house until the paperwork clears," Marcus said smoothly, standing up and walking toward her. "Then we’ll place the girl in a private boarding school in Switzerland. Out of sight, out of mind."
He reached out to touch her face—
BOOM.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the penthouse suite didn't just open; they exploded inward in a shower of splintered wood and twisted brass hinges.
The shockwave knocked Evelyn off her feet, sending her champagne glass crashing against the marble floor.
Before the dust could settle, four guards from the Corsican Mob who were standing in the hallway were hurled into the room, their bodies thudding lifelessly against the furniture.
Silenced gunfire rattled through the suite—sharp, metallic ptht-ptht-ptht sounds that sliced through the heavy silence. Six more of Marcus’s armed men collapsed to the ground before they could even draw their weapons from their shoulder holsters.
"WHAT THE HELL?!" Marcus screamed, scrambling back toward his desk where a heavy Magnum pistol lay under a pile of papers.
A heavy tactical boot stepped through the smoke and shattered wood.
Then another.
A squad of ten men in full black combat gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, swept into the room with terrifying precision, securing every corner, every doorway, every balcony in less than five seconds.
At the center of the formation stood Viktor, holding a tactical shotgun pointed straight at Marcus’s head.
"Drop to your knees," Viktor growled.
Marcus froze, his hand hovering two inches from his gun. "Do you know who I am?! I am Marcus Vance! I run the European—"
BANG.
Viktor didn't argue. He racked the shotgun and fired a beanbag round directly into Marcus’s kneecap.
Marcus shrieked in agony, collapsing onto the marble floor, clutching his shattered leg as blood pooled around his designer trousers.
"MARCUS!" Evelyn screamed, crawling backward toward the couch, her face pale with horror. "GUARDS! HELP!"
"No one is coming, Evelyn," a voice echoed from the hallway.
The room went dead silent.
I stepped through the shattered doorway, stepping over the fallen bodies of the Corsican guards. My three-piece suit was immaculate. My hands were casually tucked into my trouser pockets. My dark eyes swept across the ruined penthouse until they landed on my wife.
Evelyn stopped crawling. Her breath hitched in her throat. Her brain seemed to fracture as she tried to reconcile the man standing before her with the quiet husband who used to make her tea every morning.
"V... Vance?" she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "What... what are you wearing? Who are these men?"
I walked slowly across the room, my leather boots leaving faint red imprints on the pristine white marble.
I stopped right in front of Marcus, who was writhing on the floor, gasping for air.

I looked down at him, then raised my eyes to Evelyn.
"You left your iPad on," I said softly.
