Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Evelyn’s face drained of every last drop of blood.
"Vance... listen to me..." she stammered, scrambling to her feet, her hands outstretched in a desperate, pleading gesture. "It's not what you think! Marcus... Marcus forced me! He threatened to hurt you! He threatened to hurt Mia!"
I didn't answer. I reached into my inner jacket pocket.
Evelyn flinched, pulling back, expecting a gun.
Instead, I pulled out a small black velvet bag, opened it, and poured its contents onto the glass coffee table beside her.
It was a pile of broken watch gears, tiny gold screws, and a shattered glass crystal.
"Do you remember this watch, Evelyn?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "You gave it to me on our third anniversary. You bought it from a street vendor in Paris for fifty euros. You told me it was broken, but you believed I was smart enough to fix it."
"Vance... please..." she sobbed, tears streaming down her face, ruining her expensive makeup.
"I spent forty hours at my workbench fixing this cheap, worthless watch," I continued, staring at the ruined gears. "Not because the watch had value. But because I loved the woman who gave it to me. I thought that woman was gentle. I thought she was kind. I thought she loved our daughter."
I stepped closer to her. She backed away until her spine hit the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
"I spent six years letting you make fun of me," I whispered. "I let your sister call me a parasite. I let your friends look at me like I was trash on the bottom of their shoes. Because I wanted Mia to grow up in a home filled with peace, not blood."
"Vance, I love you!" Evelyn shrieked, dropping to her knees and grabbing the hem of my trousers. "I swear I love you! Marcus manipulated me! He told me you were broke! He told me—"
"Quiet," I said.
The word was spoken so softly, yet it carried such immense, crushing weight that Evelyn’s mouth snapped shut instantly.
I looked down at Marcus, who was glaring up at me through tears of pain, his teeth bared like a wounded dog.
"Brother," Marcus choked out, spitting blood onto the marble. "You think... you think you've won? My European partners... Don Carmine... they will slaughter you..."
Viktor chuckled softly from the doorway.
I pulled out my satellite phone, hit speaker, and held it down toward Marcus.
"Don Carmine," I said.
"Vance, my boy," the deep, gravelly voice of the Italian Syndicate Chairman filled the room. "Is the pest taken care of?"
Marcus’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. "Don... Don Carmine? No... no! You were my backer!"
"You are an idiot, Marcus," Don Carmine said coldly over the line. "You tried to steal from the King of America. Vance Sterling built the infrastructure that feeds all of our families. Did you really think I would choose a rat over the man who holds our keys? Vance... the European territory is yours. Do with him as you see fit."
The line went dead.
Marcus let out a guttural whimper, all the arrogance draining out of him, leaving behind only a broken, pathetic coward.
I looked at Viktor.
"Take Marcus," I ordered. "Strip him of everything. Put him on a cargo ship bound for our black site in Sub-Saharan Africa. He will work the cobalt mines until his lungs give out."
"NO! VANCE! PLEASE!" Marcus screamed as two giant guards grabbed him by his collar and dragged him out of the suite, his blood smearing across the floor.
Then, I turned back to Evelyn.
She was trembling on the floor, looking up at me as if I were the devil himself.
"And me?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "Are you going to kill me, Vance?"
I looked at her for a long time. The anger in my chest was gone, replaced by a cold, vast emptiness.
"No, Evelyn," I said gently. "I am not going to kill you. Killing you would mean I still feel something for you."
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a single sheet of paper—a pre-drafted, absolute divorce agreement, along with a full surrender of all parental rights.
"You will sign this," I said, tossing the paper onto her lap along with a gold pen. "You will surrender every right to see Mia. You will surrender every asset, every property, every dollar that carries the name Sterling or Vance. You will walk out of this hotel with the clothes on your back."
"Vance... please... don't take my daughter..." she wept.
"She ceased being your daughter the moment you watched her freeze on an iPad screen while drinking champagne," I said, my voice hardening like steel. "If you ever step foot in the United States again... if you ever attempt to contact Mia... if you even whisper her name... I will not send you to a mine, Evelyn. I will erase your existence so completely that not even the sun will remember your name."
Evelyn looked into my eyes, saw the absolute, unyielding truth in them, and grabbed the pen with shaking hands.
She signed her name at the bottom of the page, her tears smudging the black ink.
I took the paper back, folded it neatly, and placed it inside my jacket.

"Goodbye, Evelyn," I said.
I turned around and walked out of the ruined suite, leaving my past behind in the cold, foggy air of Milan.
