Chapter 1 - The Wrath of Jonathan WhitmoreThe heavy oak doors at the end of the maternity ward corridor slammed against the wall with a deafening crash. Heavy footsteps thundered across the polished linoleum floor, accompanied by the crisp, authoritative commands of private security personnel.

“Seal every exit,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed through the hallway. “Nobody leaves this floor with that baby.”
Adrian Hale’s smug expression vanished in an instant. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in a charcoal suit. Beside him, Vanessa clutched the baby blanket tighter around little Lily, her eyes darting frantically toward the hallway. Celeste gripped her pearls, her breath catching in her throat.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Celeste shrieked, stepping in front of Adrian. “We are respectable people! My son is a prominent real estate developer! You can’t just—!”
The crowd of security guards parted instantly.
Walking down the center of the corridor was a tall, imposing man in a bespoke navy suit. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, his jaw set in a line of absolute, terrifying fury. Behind him walked four corporate attorneys and the hospital’s chief executive officer, who looked terrified to even breathe near him.
It was Jonathan Whitmore.
My father.
I sat up against the hospital pillows, my stitches aching, but my eyes locked onto the man who had built an empire from the ground up. He didn't look at Adrian. He didn't look at Vanessa. His dark, piercing gaze landed entirely on the tiny bundle clutched in Adrian’s trembling arms.
“Hand my granddaughter over,” Jonathan said. His voice wasn’t loud, but it carried the chilling weight of absolute authority that commanded the entire floor.
Adrian swallowed hard, trying to summon a shred of his corporate bravado. “Mr... Mr. Whitmore? Sir, there’s been a misunderstanding. This is—this is my child. Claire was just a surrogate, and—”
“A surrogate?” Jonathan interrupted, taking another step forward. The air in the room grew suffocating. “You forged a document while my daughter was unconscious under medical care, attempting to steal a child from her mother, and you call it a misunderstanding?”
Jonathan snapped his fingers. Two massive security operatives stepped forward, instantly pinning Adrian’s arms to his sides. Lily let out a terrified wail as she was jostled, and before Adrian could resist, one of the guards gently but firmly pried the baby from his grasp and handed her back to me.
I pulled my daughter against my chest, burying my face in her soft blanket as tears of overwhelming relief spilled down my cheeks. “I’ve got you, baby. Mommy’s right here.”

Vanessa stepped back, her hands flying to her mouth. “You... you’re Claire’s father? But she lived in a two-bedroom apartment! She drove a ten-year-old car! She told us her family was nothing!”
“My daughter chose to live a humble life to find a man who loved her for who she was, not what was in our bank accounts,” Jonathan replied coldly, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Vanessa. “A lesson you and your pathetic accomplice failed to learn.”
