Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction of ClaireTwo weeks after the incident at the hospital, I was resting in the sunroom of our family estate—a sprawling, magnificent property overlooking the bay that Adrian had never even known existed.

Lily slept peacefully in a handcrafted mahogany crib beside my chair, her tiny chest rising and falling in a rhythmic, comforting cadence.

My father walked in carrying a silver tray with chamomile tea and fresh fruit. He set it down gently on the glass table and pulled up a chair beside me.

“How are the stitches healing, Claire?” he asked softly, his eyes filled with a father's deep, protective care.

“Much better, Dad,” I smiled, taking a sip of the warm tea. “The doctor said I’ll be back to full strength soon. Though I think holding Lily is the best medicine in the world.”

Jonathan smiled, though a shadow of corporate severity quickly crossed his face. “Good. Because your legal team and forensic accountants have finished auditing Adrian’s corporate accounts.”

I set my teacup down. “And?”

“And the man was even more hollow than we realized,” Jonathan said, opening a leather portfolio. “Every single real estate project Adrian claimed to own, every boutique hotel, every luxury vehicle—they were all heavily leveraged against ghost loans and fabricated collateral. Without the shadow backing of Whitmore Enterprises, which I quietly maintained through a shell corporation to test his business ethics over the last two years, Adrian’s company was already on the verge of bankruptcy.”

I looked at the pages of financial ruin. For three years, I had believed I was helping a struggling, hard-working entrepreneur build his dream. I had lived modestly, shopped at thrift stores, and eaten street tacos with him, genuinely believing we were building a life together from the ground up.

Instead, he was a fraud who viewed me as a convenient accessory—until he thought he could discard me for his mistress and a fake surrogacy contract.

“He’s going to lose everything, isn't he?” I asked quietly.

“Every penny,” Jonathan confirmed without a trace of pity. “His assets are being seized by creditors, his bank accounts are frozen, and his trial is scheduled for next month. He won't just face prison time; he will leave behind millions in personal debt that will follow him for the rest of his natural life.”

I nodded slowly, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over me. The fear and betrayal that had gripped my heart in the hospital room had dissolved into clear, unshakeable strength.

“Good,” I said. “Let the law take its course.”
