Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsThe hospital room had transformed into a makeshift command center. Hospital administrators stood nervously by the door, while Jonathan’s legal team examined the forged surrogacy document Adrian had thrown onto my bed.

Adrian, now seated in a metal chair with his hands cuffed behind his back by local police officers who had arrived moments later, glared at me with pure venom.
“You lied to me,” Adrian hissed, his voice trembling with humiliated rage. “For three years, you pretended to be ordinary! You let me pay the rent! You let me think you had nothing!”
“I didn't lie, Adrian,” I said softly, nursing Lily while resting against my father’s shoulder. “I never said I had no family. I said my relationship with my father was complicated. You simply assumed I was poor because your own mind is entirely consumed by greed and status.”
Celeste burst into tears, wringing her hands as she addressed Jonathan directly. “Mr. Whitmore, please! This is all a terrible mistake! Adrian was just stressed about the business! We didn't mean any real harm—surely we can settle this like civilized people without involving the courts!”
Jonathan didn't even look at her. He was busy reviewing a tablet handed to him by his lead attorney, Marcus Vance.
“Civilized people don't forge legal documents, Mrs. Hale,” Jonathan said without lifting his eyes from the screen. “And they certainly don't attempt to traffic a newborn infant. Marcus, have the preliminary charges been filed?”
“Yes, Mr. Whitmore,” Marcus replied smoothly. “Attempted child abduction, forgery of legal instruments, conspiracy to commit fraud, and falsification of notarial seals. The local prosecutor is reviewing the file now. Bail will not be an option given their immediate flight risk.”
Vanessa panicked, turning on Adrian with absolute fury. “You said her family was broke! You said her father was a nobody truck driver in Ohio! You promised me half of the Whitmore estate once we got rid of her!”
Adrian flinched, glaring at Vanessa. “Shut your mouth, you idiot!”
“Oh, no, I am not going to prison for your stupidity!” Vanessa shrieked, tears of rage streaming down her face as police officers approached her with a pair of silver bracelets. “He planned the whole thing, officer! He forged her signature! He hired a corrupt notary in Nevada to stamp the papers while we were in Boston!”
The officers didn't hesitate. They clicked the cuffs around Vanessa’s wrists, followed shortly by Celeste, who began hyperventilating as she was led out of the room.
Adrian sat in silence, his head bowed, staring at the linoleum floor. The man who had walked into my hospital room forty minutes earlier with arrogant swagger was completely destroyed.

“Take them away,” Jonathan instructed the officers.
As Adrian was hauled out of the room, he looked back at me one last time. There was no anger left in his eyes—only the hollow, shivering realization of what he had thrown away.
