Chapter 4 - Temptation in the CitadelIn the days following the warehouse raid, the power dynamic in New York shifted dramatically. The news of Dominic’s demise and the total destruction of his faction sent shockwaves through the five families. The whispers that Vincent Moretti was weak or vulnerable ceased overnight.

However, inside the grand Moretti mansion, a different kind of war was brewing—one of quiet glances, unspoken desires, and unbearable proximity.

Anna sat in the mansion’s sprawling library, reviewing the financial restructuring documents she had drawn up for the Moretti legitimate enterprises. She had managed to legalise three of their major transport subsidiaries, insulating the family from future federal scrutiny.

The heavy oak doors opened softly, and the hum of electric wheels signaled Vincent’s entry.

He was dressed in a dark silk shirt, the top buttons undone, revealing the strong contours of his chest and collarbone. Free from the formal suits he wore during business meetings, he looked dangerously attractive.

"You're working late," Vincent said, rolling over to the massive mahogany desk across from her.

"I'm finishing the restructuring for the logistics firm," Anna replied, trying to keep her tone professional, though her pulse fluttered at his presence. "If the federal prosecutors look at your books next week, they won't find a single anomaly."

Vincent paused, looking at her with a quiet intensity. "You've done more for this family in three weeks than my father's legal team did in ten years."

"I told you I was good at my job," Anna said, offering a small, cautious smile. "I don't just manipulate numbers, Vincent. I build fortresses out of them."

Vincent maneuvered his chair around the desk, stopping right beside her seat. The faint scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and clean rain drifted off him, enveloping her senses.

"Why are you still here, Anna?" he asked softly, his voice dropping into that deep, magnetic register that sent shivers down her spine. "The threat from Dominic is gone. Your father's debts are cleared. You could ask for your freedom right now, and I would grant it."

Anna froze, her fingers hovering over the laptop keyboard. She looked up into his dark, piercing eyes.

It was true. The original deal had been fulfilled in spirit. She was free to walk away, to return to her quiet, predictable life in the banking world, far away from guns, blood, and crime bosses.

Yet, the thought of leaving this mansion—leaving him—caused a strange, aching hollow in her chest.

"I..." Anna started, her voice faltering. "I haven't finished setting up the offshore trusts yet."

Vincent let out a soft, low rumble of laughter—a sound so rare and breathtakingly warm that it made her heart skip a beat.

"An excuse," Vincent murmured, leaning forward in his chair. He reached out, his long fingers gently grasping her chin, tilting her face up to meet his. "You're a terrible liar, Anna."

"Vincent..." she whispered, her breath catching as his thumb traced the contour of her lower lip.

"Do you fear me?" he asked, his gaze burning into hers.

"No," she replied truthfully, stepping closer to the edge of her seat. "I used to. But not anymore."

"You should," Vincent whispered, his eyes darkening with passion. "Because every day you stay in this house, I want you more. And I am not a patient man."

Before she could process his words, Vincent pulled her gently onto his lap, just as he had done during the attack in his study—but this time, there were no guns, no enemies, and no blood. There was only the heat of his body, the firm press of his muscular chest against hers, and the overwhelming gravity of his presence.

Anna didn't pull away. She wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, burying her fingers in his thick, dark hair.

Vincent’s lips found hers in a kiss that was slow, deep, and possessive. It wasn't a gentle request; it was a demand, a surrender, a collision of two souls forged in chaos. Anna groaned softly into his mouth, leaning into him, feeling the incredible strength of his upper body anchoring her in the storm.

His hands moved down her back, pressing her tightly against his chest, proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that despite his paralysis, he was every inch a man—vibrant, powerful, and utterly dominant.

When he finally broke the kiss, both of them were breathing heavily, their foreheads resting against each other in the quiet library.

"Tell me to stop," Vincent growled softly against her skin, his hands gripping her hips with possessive force. "Tell me you want to go back to your room, Anna. Because if you don't, I will never let you leave."

Anna looked into his eyes, seeing the vulnerability hidden beneath the hardened exterior of a mob boss. She saw a man who had been betrayed by his own body, betrayed by his lieutenants, yet remained unbroken.

"Don't stop," Anna whispered softly, laying her head against his neck. "I'm not going anywhere."
