Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Silk and Shadows

Four days later, Maya was discharged from Mount Sinai.

Despite her mild protests about needing to return to her modest studio apartment in Brooklyn and her job as a freelance graphic designer, Ethan would hear none of it. He had already dispatched a team of professional movers to pack her belongings, settle her lease, and transfer everything to his private penthouse in Tribeca.

"You need round-the-clock care for at least two weeks," Ethan stated with cool finality as his private driver held open the door of the Maybach outside the hospital. "My penthouse has a full medical staff on call, a private chef, and total security. You will not recover in a four-story walk-up in Bushwick, Maya."

"You're completely insane," Maya muttered, though there was no real anger in her voice. She was too overwhelmed by the sheer velocity at which her life was being rewritten.

When the private elevator doors opened directly into the penthouse on the 48th floor, Maya was breathless. The space was a masterpiece of architectural glass, warm walnut wood, and cream-colored velvet. A wrap-around terrace offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline and the Hudson River stretching out below.

For the first two weeks, Ethan was a contradiction that fascinated and terrified her.

By day, he was the formidable CEO of Vale Capital—a man who spent hours in his home office barking orders at international trade directors, signing billion-dollar acquisition deals, and making powerful politicians wait on hold.

By night, he was entirely hers.

He personally brought her meals prepared by his private chef. He sat beside her on the massive Italian leather sofa, patiently watching her favorite trashy reality television shows without a single complaint. When she struggled to walk to the terrace to get fresh air, he lifted her effortlessly into his arms, carrying her as if she were made of delicate glass.

Slowly, the towering walls Maya had built around her heart after years of loneliness began to crumble. She learned that behind his cold, unyielding exterior lay a man of profound loyalty, burdened by the immense weight of his family’s corporate empire and a deep, quiet loneliness that mirrored her own.

On a rainy Thursday evening, three weeks after her surgery, Maya sat on the plush sofa, watching the rain streak down the massive glass windows. She was fully healed now, wearing one of Ethan’s oversized cashmere sweaters that hung off her shoulder.

Ethan stepped out of his office, unbuttoning his vest and tossing his tie onto the desk. He looked tired, the sharp lines of his face softened by the warm ambient lighting of the living room.

He walked over and sat beside her, leaning his head back against the leather cushions.

Maya looked at him, feeling a sudden, intense warmth blooming in her chest—a feeling so strong it made her tremble. She reached out and placed her small hand over his, lacing her fingers through his.

Ethan opened his eyes, looking down at their joined hands, then up into her eyes.

"Ethan," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "I've spent my whole life feeling like an afterthought. Like if I disappeared, no one would notice."

Ethan shifted, turning his entire body toward her. His dark gray eyes burned with a fierce, absolute devotion. "You are the center of my world, Maya. You have been since the moment I saw you again."

Maya leaned in, resting her forehead against his chest, listening to the heavy, rhythmic thud of his heart. "I've never trusted anyone like this before."

May you like

Ethan froze for a second. His large hand reached up, gently brushing her dark hair behind her ear. His breath was warm against her skin as he leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a promise that made her soul shiver.

"Then I'll spend the rest of tonight proving your trust was never a mistake," he whispered into the dark.
