Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

Ethan grabbed the remote on the nightstand and clicked a button. The massive concealed television screen rising from the foot of the bed flickered to life.
A red banner flashed across the bottom of the screen: BREAKING NEWS - VALE CAPITAL IN CRISIS.
A sharp-featured female news anchor stood outside the Manhattan Civil Courthouse, holding a microphone.
"...allegations filed just thirty minutes ago by Marcus Vale, the uncle of CEO Ethan Vale and chief rival for the board’s controlling shares," the reporter announced crisply. "Marcus Vale claims that Ethan Vale has misappropriated over two hundred million dollars of corporate investment funds to finance his personal lifestyle—specifically alleging that Ethan has spent tens of millions on an unregistered, untraceable woman currently being hidden in his Tribeca penthouse."
A photograph flashed on the screen.
It was a blurry, high-resolution telephoto shot of Maya sitting on the penthouse terrace from two days ago, her face clearly visible, alongside photos of her modest Brooklyn past and her medical records from Mount Sinai.
"Sources close to the Vale family claim that Ethan Vale is currently unfit to lead the firm, alleging he has succumbed to blackmail by a street-level graphic designer with a fabricated past. An emergency board meeting has been called for 10:00 AM to strip Ethan Vale of his chief executive title..."
Ethan clicked the screen off. The room fell into a suffocating, icy silence.
Maya’s face was chalk-white. Her hands shook so violently she dropped the silk sheet. "Ethan... oh my God... your uncle... he took photos of me? He's telling the world I'm blackmailing you?"
Panicked tears spilled down her cheeks. "This is my fault. If I hadn't come here, if I hadn't let you bring me into your world—"
"Maya! Look at me!" Ethan snapped, grabbing her shoulders firmly.
His voice was like an anchor in a raging storm. There was no panic in his eyes. There was no fear. There was only a cold, terrifying bloodlust that made the air in the room drop ten degrees.
"This is not your fault," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "My uncle has been trying to take controlling interest of Vale Capital since my father died five years ago. He used his surveillance team to spy on my private residence because he was looking for a weapon to use against me at the annual shareholder vote next week."
"He's going to ruin you!" Maya sobbed. "The board meeting is in two hours! The media is going to destroy your reputation!"
Ethan stood up from the bed. He walked over to his dressing room, pulling on a crisp white shirt, a silk tie, and a tailored charcoal suit with slow, deliberate precision. Every movement was calm, calculated, and lethal.
He buttoned his suit jacket, checked his gold cufflinks, and walked back to the side of the bed. He knelt beside her, pulling her into a gentle embrace.
"Marcus made two fatal mistakes today," Ethan said quietly against her cheek. "First, he believed he could intimidate me with a public smear campaign."
He pulled back, wiping her tears with his thumb, a dark, terrifying smile touching his lips.
"And second... he put your face on national television."
"Ethan, what are you going to do?" Maya asked, terrified of the darkness radiating from him.

"I am going to attend that board meeting," Ethan said softly. "And by 11:00 AM, my uncle will realize that taking away the thing I love was the last mistake he will ever make on this earth. Stay here with David and the security team. Do not open the doors for anyone."
He kissed her deeply, a taste of iron and promise, then turned and walked out of the suite, his long coat sweeping around his ankles like the wings of a vengeful angel.
