Chapter 6 - The Legacy Unbroken

One year later.
The annual Vale Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the historic Vale Estate—a massive, sprawling stone castle surrounded by ancient oak trees just outside the city. It was the premier event of the financial calendar, filled with foreign dignitaries, business leaders, and philanthropists.
I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, dressed in a breathtaking, emerald-green silk gown that perfectly matched my eyes. Around my neck hung the silver pendant my biological father had left me, now polished to a brilliant shine and set into a delicate diamond chain provided by my grandmother’s collection.
The music swelled, and the master of ceremonies stepped to the microphone at the center of the ballroom.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the new Managing Director of the Vale Trust, Miss Elena Hale-Vale."
The applause was deafening, a warm, thunderous wave of sound that filled the massive space. I walked down the staircase, my posture flawless, my smile genuine and filled with absolute peace.
I looked down at the head table, where my grandfather sat, looking frail but incredibly proud, his silver hair shining under the crystal chandeliers. Beside him stood Marcus and a team of loyal professionals who had helped me rebuild my life from the ashes.
During the dinner, an assistant approached my table, whispering softly in my ear. "Miss Vale, there is a woman at the perimeter gate. She claims to be your mother, Evelyn. She’s... she’s dressed very poorly, ma'am, and she's begging to see you for just five minutes. Security wants to know if they should remove her."
I paused, my fingers lightly touching the silver pendant at my chest. I looked out over the beautiful, brilliant room filled with people who respected my mind, my talent, and my authority. I remembered the cold stone steps, the freezing snow, and the sound of the lock clicking shut.
"Tell the security team to give her a warm coat," I said quietly, my voice entirely devoid of malice, filled only with the calm finality of a woman who had outgrown her ghosts. "Give her a coat, make sure she has a safe ride back to her apartment, and tell her that Miss Vale is currently unavailable. She has a seat at her own table now."

The assistant nodded and hurried away.
I lifted my glass of champagne, looking at my grandfather, who raised his glass in return. The legacy was unbroken. The strength was restored. And as the music continued to play into the warm summer night, I knew that the cold would never touch me again.
