Chapter 2 - Cold Fury

The walk from the secure monitoring room to the main living area felt like an eternity, yet my steps were perfectly calculated. I didn't rush. I didn't shout. I allowed the silence of the mansion to amplify the gravity of what was about to happen.

As I approached the heavy double doors of the living room, I could still hear Patricia’s sharp, demanding voice through the hallway.

"Take the girls upstairs to their rooms, Rosa. They will stay there without lunch until they learn how to greet me properly when I walk into a room."

I pushed the doors open.

The click of the latch made everyone turn instantly. The atmosphere in the room shifted from terrifying tension to absolute, paralyzed shock.

Patricia froze. The cruel sneer on her face instantly dissolved, replaced by a pale, wide-eyed mask of panic. Within a fraction of a second, she tried to reassemble her fake persona. She forced a bright smile, though her eyes remained wide with terror.

"Adrian!" she gasped, her voice instantly shifting to a sweet, melodic pitch. "Darling! What... what are you doing back? Did your flight get canceled? Oh, thank goodness, I missed you so much already!"

She took two steps toward me, her arms opening for a hug, expecting the same doting fiancé she had manipulated for months.

I didn't move. I stood completely still, my hands resting at my sides, my eyes boring into hers with total detachment. When she realized I wasn't reaching back out to her, her arms slowly dropped to her sides.

"Adrian?" she whispered, a bead of sweat breaking near her hairline. "Is everything okay? You look... strange."

I ignored her completely and walked right past her. I knelt down on the floor, picked up Martina’s stuffed rabbit from the corner, and walked over to my daughters. Both girls were staring at me as if they were seeing a ghost. They looked frozen, uncertain if they were allowed to react.

"Martina," I said softly, handing her the toy. "I'm so sorry, baby."

The moment the toy touched her hands, the dam broke. Martina let out a ragged sob and threw her small arms around my neck. Daniela immediately followed, burying her face into my shoulder, her tiny body shaking with months of repressed fear. I held them tightly against my chest, feeling an overwhelming wave of guilt. I had built a fortress to protect my family from the outside world, yet I had personally invited the wolf through the front door.

"Rosa," I said, looking up at the loyal woman who stood near the kitchen entrance, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks.

"Yes, Mr. Adrian?"

"Take the girls upstairs. Pack their favorite things. We are staying at the downtown penthouse for a few days."

"Right away, sir," Rosa said, her voice filled with profound relief. She gently guided Martina and Daniela out of the room. My daughters didn't look back at Patricia once. They kept their eyes glued to the floor until they vanished up the grand staircase.

Once the room was empty, the silence returned, heavier and sharper than before.

"Adrian, please let me explain," Patricia began, her voice turning defensive as she realized her sweet act was failing. "You don't understand what it's like looking after children. They were being completely unruly today! They don't respect me, and Rosa is constantly undermining my authority. I was just trying to establish some discipline so we can be a real family—"

"Quiet," I said.

The single word wasn't loud, but it carried the weight of an absolute command. Patricia snapped her mouth shut.

I pulled my smartphone from my pocket and tapped the screen twice. I had synced the security feed directly to my device. Without saying another word, I turned the screen toward her and pressed play.

The audio boomed through the quiet living room: “When your father isn’t here, you’ll do exactly what I say... I will make sure the police find a missing diamond necklace in your tiny apartment...”

Patricia watched her own reflection commit social and legal suicide on the small screen. The last remnants of her composure shattered. Her face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated hatred.

"You spied on me?" she hissed, dropping all pretense of elegance. "You set a trap for me in your own home?"

"I protected my daughters from a sociopath," I corrected her coldly. "You have exactly ten minutes to pack whatever belongings you brought into this house. If you are still on my property when the clock strikes twelve, my security team will physically remove you, and I will hand this footage directly to the district attorney for child endangerment and extortion."

May you like

Patricia drew herself up to her full height, her eyes flashing with malice. "You think you can just discard me like this, Adrian? My family has deep connections in the city's legal circle. If you throw me out, I will drag your name through the mud. I will make sure every business partner you have knows that you're an unstable, paranoid lunatic who abuses his wealth!"

"Nine minutes, Patricia," I replied, looking down at my watch. "I suggest you start packing."
