Chapter 3 - Gathering the Armor

By nightfall, the penthouse downtown was filled with the warm aroma of Rosa’s homemade chicken soup. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, but for the first time in months, my attention wasn't on work. It was entirely focused on the two little girls sitting on the plush sofa, watching a movie while Rosa sat beside them, braiding Daniela's hair.
The atmosphere was peaceful, yet I knew the true battle had only just begun. Patricia wasn't the type of woman to walk away quietly. She was highly calculated, deeply vengeful, and backed by a prominent family with significant influence.
I sat in the penthouse study with Arthur and my primary corporate attorney, Christopher Vance. On the desk lay a thick manila folder containing everything my security team had managed to unearth about Patricia over the past six hours.
"It's worse than we thought, Adrian," Christopher said, adjusting his glasses as he slid a document toward me. "Patricia isn't just a high-society socialite looking for a wealthy marriage. She’s a professional."
I looked at the documents. Patricia Vance-Leroy (formerly Patricia Gable).
"Three years ago, she was engaged to a real estate mogul in Chicago," Arthur explained, pointing to a series of heavily redacted legal settlements. "He had a son from a previous marriage. Within six months of the engagement, the boy was enrolled in a strict boarding school overseas under suspicious circumstances. Shortly after, the mogul suffered a sudden stroke. Patricia walked away with a four-million-dollar settlement before the estate could even go to probate."
"She uses isolation as a weapon," I realized aloud, the horror settling deep into my bones. "She targets men with children, cuts off their support systems, distances the children, and then takes control of the wealth."
"Exactly," Christopher agreed. "And she’s already launching her counter-attack against you. Look at this."
He turned on the television in the office, muting the volume but showing a local high-society blog. A headline flashed across the screen: "Billionaire Tech Mogul Adrian Castillo Suffers Meltdown, Holds Daughters Hostage in Penthouse After Breaking Engagement."
The article claimed that I had become intensely paranoid due to corporate stress, that I had falsely accused my beautiful fiancée of theft, and that I was keeping my daughters isolated from the world. It was a calculated preemptive strike designed to destroy my credibility before I could release the security footage.
"She’s trying to force your hand, Adrian," Christopher warned. "If you leak the security footage now, her lawyers will claim it was heavily edited, illegally obtained, and part of a smear campaign driven by your alleged mental instability. We need more than just one morning of video. We need a definitive, airtight case that leaves her legal team completely defenseless."
I stood up and walked to the window, watching the city lights blink in the darkness. I thought about Martina holding her breath in fear, and Daniela shielding her sister with her own small body.
"She wants a war," I whispered, my reflection in the glass looking older, harder. "I will give her an absolute execution. Arthur, I want a full forensic audit of every financial account Patricia touched during our six-month engagement. Check the boutique allowances, the charity galas, everything. Christopher, file an immediate, sealed emergency petition for a permanent restraining order based on the video evidence. We don't go public yet. We let her think her media campaign is working."
I left the study and walked into the living room. The movie had finished, and my daughters were yawning, leaning against Rosa.
I sat on the edge of the sofa and looked at Rosa. "Rosa, I want to apologize to you. I let her words cloud my judgment. I should have trusted the woman who has been a mother to my children since my wife passed away."
May you like
Rosa offered a warm, forgiving smile, her eyes shining with tears. "Mr. Adrian, you are a good father who was blinded by a clever wolf. You don't need to apologize to me. You came back. That is all that matters."
I pulled my daughters into my arms, burying my face in their hair. "I am never leaving again," I whispered to them. "No more trips. No more fake departures. We stay together."
