Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

The quiet warmth of the nursery evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, sharp tension that filled the entire estate.
Victor stood up from the small chair, his expression hardening back into stone. He released Lena’s hand, though his eyes lingered on her face for a second longer before he turned to Marcus.
"Who authorized the leak?" Victor demanded, his voice turning into iron.
"It came from within the internal audit team," Marcus reported, stepping into the corridor as Victor followed him out. "Someone pulled Daniel's archived files from three years ago. They’re framing his estate for money laundering—and they’ve issued an arrest warrant for Lena as a co-conspirator."
Lena stepped out into the hallway, her face draining of all color, her heart dropping into her stomach. "What? An arrest warrant? I... I don't know anything about Daniel's old files! He was just an auditor!"
Victor stopped in his tracks. He turned around, stepping back toward Lena until he was standing inches from her, his presence an impenetrable wall of safety.
"Look at me, Lena," Victor commanded softly.
Lena looked up into his dark eyes, her body trembling with panic.
"Nobody is arresting you," Victor said, his voice flat, absolute, and terrifyingly calm. "Nobody is touching you or your daughter. Do you understand me?"
"Victor... if the federal prosecutors are involved—"
"The federal prosecutors are being manipulated by Julian Moretti," Victor stated coldly. "Moretti has been trying to seize my shipping lanes for three years. He couldn't beat me on the streets, so he’s trying to destroy my infrastructure through the courts—and he’s using your late husband’s name to do it."
Victor turned to Marcus. "Lock down the estate. Double the perimeter guard. If any law enforcement vehicles approach the iron gates without my personal clearance, deny them entry."
"Yes, Boss," Marcus bowed his head and hurried down the stairs.
For the next forty-eight hours, the Vance estate became a command center.
Victor stayed in his private study on the ground floor, working alongside a team of six high-powered defense attorneys and intelligence operatives. Computer monitors glowed through the night, phone lines hummed, and black sedans arrived and departed under the cover of darkness.
Through it all, Lena stayed in the west wing with Ellie, her anxiety growing with every passing hour.
She knew how the world worked. Powerful men like Julian Moretti didn't care about collateral damage. To them, a widowed waitress and her baby were nothing more than pawn pieces to be crushed on a chessboard.
On Thursday night, unable to sleep, Lena walked down the quiet grand staircase toward the kitchen to make a cup of chamomile tea.
As she passed the open door of the study, she saw Victor sitting behind his mahogany desk. His jacket was tossed over a chair, his tie loosened, his hair disheveled as he rubbed his eyes in exhaustion.
A single lamp lit the room, casting long, dramatic shadows across the mahogany shelves.
Lena hesitated, then walked softly into the room, holding a mug of warm tea.
She set the mug on the edge of his desk. "You haven't slept in two days, Victor."
Victor opened his eyes, looking up at her. A faint, soft sigh escaped his lips as he saw her standing there. "Sleep is a luxury I can't afford right now, Lena."
"Drink the tea," she insisted gently, sitting in the leather chair across from him. "You can't protect anyone if you collapse from exhaustion."
Victor looked at the steaming mug, then picked it up, taking a slow sip. He set it down and looked across the desk at her, his dark eyes studying her tired face.
"Daniel was getting close to discovering Moretti’s embezzlement three years ago," Victor said quietly, breaking the silence. "That's why Daniel died, Lena. It wasn't a random highway accident. Moretti’s men tampered with his brake lines."
Lena’s breath caught in her throat. The world seemed to stop spinning. Tears flooded her eyes, her hands tightly clenching her lapels.
"They... they killed him?" Lena whispered, her voice cracking with profound grief. "All this time... I thought it was just a terrible accident..."
"I suspected it back then," Victor admitted, his voice rough with a deep, dark regret. "But I didn't have the hard evidence to prove it in court. I swore that day I would bring Moretti down. But I brought you into this mess, Lena. If I hadn't hired you..."
"No," Lena interrupted fiercely, wiping her tears away with her sleeve. She stood up, walking around the desk until she was standing right beside his chair. "If you hadn't hired me, I would still be hiding my baby in a bleach closet. You gave us a home, Victor. You gave us safety."
She reached down, her hands gently framing his sharp jawline, forcing him to look up into her eyes.
"Don't you dare blame yourself for what evil men do," Lena said, her voice filled with a fiery, unshakeable conviction.
Victor stared at her. For the first time since she had known him, the cold, impenetrable armor of the mafia boss completely shattered. He reached up, his large hand wrapping around her wrist, pulling her gently toward him until she was sitting on his lap.
He rested his forehead against her shoulder, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist, holding her close against his chest as if she were his only anchor in a storm.

"I won't let them take you, Lena," Victor murmured against her neck, his breath warm against her skin. "I swear on my life."
Lena wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders, burying her face in his neck, feeling the heavy, powerful beat of his heart against her ribs.
