Chapter 4 - The Strike at Dawn

The storm hit at 4:00 a.m.
Thunder rumbled across the valley, heavy rain lashing against the stone walls of the estate.
In the master bedroom of the west wing, Lena awoke with a sudden, icy jolt of panic. It wasn't the thunder that had awakened her—it was the sudden, sharp cut of the electric power.
The room dropped into pitch-black darkness. The steady hum of the backup generators failed to kick in.
"Victor..." Lena whispered, sitting up in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
A second later, the quiet of the night was shattered by a muffled EXPLOSION near the eastern perimeter wall!
BOOM!
The glass windows trembled in their frames. Alarms began to blare across the grounds—not the loud electronic sirens, but the sharp, tactical horns of the private security force.
Lena threw off her covers, sprinting across the dark room into the nursery. She scooped Ellie out of her crib, wrapping her tightly in a thick wool blanket, holding the sleeping baby close to her chest.
Footsteps rushed down the dark hallway.
The nursery door burst open. Victor stood in the doorway, illuminated by the flash of lightning outside the window. He was wearing a dark tactical vest over his black shirt, a custom handgun strapped to his thigh, and an earpiece buzzing with frantic security reports.
"Moretti’s private mercenary squad breached the east wall," Victor said, his voice deadly calm, his dark eyes locked on Lena. "They cut the primary power lines and brought electromagnetic jammers to disable the gates."
"Victor!" Lena cried out, backing toward the wall.
Victor closed the distance in two strides. He didn't hesitate; he wrapped one arm around Lena’s waist and took Ellie securely with his other hand, pulling them both out into the hallway.
"Marcus is holding the main staircase," Victor commanded, leading them rapidly down a hidden service corridor tucked behind the oak paneling. "We're going to the lower vault. It’s a reinforced concrete bunker beneath the wine cellar. It has an independent power grid and direct satellite communications."
As they descended the narrow stone steps, gunfire erupted from the floor above—sharp, terrifying bursts of automatic weapons echoing through the stone halls.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Lena held her breath, tears stinging her eyes, clutching Victor’s tactical vest as they reached the heavy steel door of the vault at the bottom of the stairs.
Victor punched a seven-digit code into a mechanical keypad. The heavy steel door unlatched with a loud, pneumatic hiss, swinging open to reveal a warm, well-lit room equipped with emergency monitors, medical supplies, and comfortable seating.
"Get inside," Victor ordered, setting Ellie gently onto a soft leather sofa inside the vault.
Lena turned around, grabbing Victor’s hands before he could step back into the corridor. "You're coming in with us!"
"I have to close the door from the outside, Lena," Victor said softly, his thumbs gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "The mechanical lock only engages from the exterior control panel. Once it’s sealed, nobody can get through—not even with explosives."
"No!" Lena sobbed, clutching his vest fiercely. "You can't go back up there! They came to kill you!"
Victor looked into her eyes, his expression softening into an expression of profound, overwhelming tenderness. He reached up, gently cupping her neck, and pulled her toward him, pressing his lips against hers in a hard, fierce, desperate kiss that stole the breath from her lungs.
"I told you once," Victor whispered against her lips, his dark eyes burning with absolute devotion. "Nobody touches my family under my roof. I’m going to finish this, Lena."
Before she could scream, Victor gently pushed her back into the vault, hit the exterior lock button, and pulled the heavy steel door shut.
The locks clicked into place with a thunderous, final sound.

Lena slammed her hands against the cold steel door, sobbing uncontrollably. "VICTOR! NO! VICTOR!"
Inside the quiet, secure vault, Ellie let out a soft whimpering sound on the sofa. Lena turned around, dropping to her knees beside her daughter, pulling the baby into her arms, pressing her face against Ellie’s soft hair as the quiet monitors on the wall displayed the chaotic battle unfolding on the floors above.
