Chapter 2 - Ghosts of the PastThe black bulletproof Mercedes sedan cut through the slick, rain-drenched streets of Manhattan, heading toward Alexander’s private estate in Greenwich, Connecticut. The interior was silent save for the hum of the climate control and Lily’s soft, exhausted breathing as she drifted off to sleep against Camila’s shoulder.

Camila stared out the tinted window, watching the neon city lights smear into long ribbons of red and white.

Seven years.

Seven years since she had packed a single suitcase, left her wedding ring on the mahogany nightstand in their penthouse, and walked out into the rain while Alexander was away in London finalizing a multi-billion-dollar port acquisition.

She remembered the threat as if it were carved into her skin.

“If you stay with him, your blood will pay for his ambition,” the voice on the burner phone had whispered in the dark. “We know where your sister lives. We know where your parents sleep. Tell him the merger failed, or watch them burn.”

Camila had chosen to protect her family. She had vanished without a trace, cutting off all ties, changing her name in everyday circles back to her maiden moniker, and raising Lily alone in a quiet Boston suburb before moving back to New York a month ago. She had believed that by staying away from Alexander, she was keeping him—and her daughter—safe from the shadowy corporate enemies who hunted men like him.

And now, fate—or a very calculated trap—had dropped Lily right into his lap.

From the jump seat facing them, Alexander sat motionless. His eyes were fixed on Camila, studying her profile in the dim dashboard light. The passage of time had sharpened her features, adding a quiet, resilient grace to the girl he had loved with reckless intensity in their twenties.

"You knew," Alexander said softly, breaking the long silence.

Camila didn't look at him. "Knew what?"

"That she was mine." Alexander’s voice was dangerously low. "From the moment she was born. You knew, and you kept her from me."

Camila finally turned her head, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, bitter fire. "Keep my voice down, Alexander. She's sleeping."

"Answer me," he demanded, leaning forward. "Why, Camila? Why did you walk out? One night you were planning our future, and the next, your closet was empty, your phone was disconnected, and the police were telling me your apartment in the city was scrubbed clean."

"Because you were arrogant enough to think your money could protect everyone," Camila spat back, her voice shaking with suppressed rage and fear. "You thought because you owned half of Manhattan, the people who hated you would just back down. They called me, Alexander. The night before our wedding anniversary. They told me if I didn't leave you, you wouldn't just lose your company—you would lose your life piece by piece."

Alexander froze. The aggressive, interrogative posture melted away, replaced by a sudden, chilling stillness.

"Who?" he asked, every syllable sharp as glass.

"I didn't know who they were," Camila whispered, tears welling up again. "They used a voice modifier. They knew my family's schedules, my sister's address, every detail of my life. I was terrified. I thought... I thought if I disappeared, the target would vanish from your back."

"And instead, you ran into the dark alone," Alexander said, his voice thick with a dark, suffocating remorse. He reached out, his hand hovering inches from her cheek before pulling back, as if he had no right to touch her. "You carried my child in secret, living in fear, while I spent years hardening my heart into stone, believing you simply grew tired of my world."

"Your world is a battlefield, Alexander," Camila said, looking down at Lily's peaceful face. "And today proved it. Someone knew where Lily would be. Someone knew she would take that specific route to escape the rain. That package wasn't just a threat to you... it was a message telling us that wherever we go, they can reach us."

Alexander's expression hardened into granite. He turned and pressed a button on the privacy console.

"Marcus," he said into the encrypted comms line. "Run a full spectrum analysis on the transmission frequency recovered from that package. I want every telecom ping within a five-mile radius of the restaurant pulled from the last forty-eight hours. Find out who knew my security schedule."

"Sir, preliminary diagnostics indicate the signal wasn't local," Marcus's voice crackled back through the speaker. "It was routed through an offshore server registered in the Cayman Islands. Under a shell corporation."
