Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Iron and StoneThe wrought-iron gates of Vale Estate swung open automatically as the Mercedes approached, flanked by concrete guard towers and reinforced perimeter walls that looked more like a military compound than a private residence.

Lily stirred as the car came to a smooth halt on the cobblestone courtyard. She rubbed her eyes, looking out the window at the towering stone manor illuminated by warm, concealed spotlights.
"Mommy... is this a castle?" she whispered, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
"Something like that, sweetie," Camila murmured, helping her untangle her raincoat.
When the car door opened, Alexander stepped out first, offering his hand to Camila. She hesitated for a fraction of a second before taking it, letting him steady her as she stepped onto the wet stone.
Inside the grand foyer, a team of domestic staff stood at attention, led by Mrs. Gable, the stoic head housekeeper who had managed the Vale estate for thirty years. Mrs. Gable took one look at Lily’s wet red boots and Camila’s soaked coat, then looked at Alexander’s grim face.
Not a single question was asked.
"Prepare the east wing master suite," Alexander instructed immediately. "Have the medical team examine Miss Lily for any signs of chill, and see that dry clothes and hot tea are brought up immediately."
"Right away, Mr. Vale," Mrs. Gable said, offering a warm, reassuring smile to Lily. "Come along with me, young lady. We have some wonderful hot chocolate waiting upstairs, and perhaps a warm bath to wash away the rainy day."
Lily looked up at Camila for permission. Camila nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "Go ahead, baby. Mommy will be right here."
Once the double doors of the east wing closed behind them, the cavernous foyer fell into a tense, suffocating silence.
Alexander turned to face Camila, his expression unreadable. "You’re safe here, Camila. No one gets onto this property without my direct authorization. The airspace is monitored, the perimeter is laser-grid secured, and my personal detail outnumbers any private security firm in the tri-state area."
"Safety is an illusion, Alexander, and you know it," Camila said, wrapping her arms around herself as if trying to hold herself together. "If they found us once, they can find us again. Today wasn't a random coincidence. Lily walked into that restaurant because someone guided her there."
"And that is why we are going to find out who did it," Alexander said, stepping closer. The raw, commanding presence that terrified his boardroom adversaries was entirely absent, replaced by an intense, burning determination. "For seven years, I thought I was alone. I spent every day building an empire out of spite, thinking nobody cared if I lived or died. And now I find out I have a daughter. I have you back under my roof. I will burn down every corporation, every shell company, and every enemy I have before I let anyone lay a finger on either of you."
Camila looked up into his eyes, seeing the fierce, unyielding devotion that had made her fall in love with him a decade ago.
"You haven't changed at all," she breathed, a sad smile touching her lips. "You still think you can conquer the world by sheer force of will."
"Watch me," Alexander replied softly.
Just then, his secure satellite phone vibrated in his breast pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the encrypted screen, and his jaw clenched.
"Speak of the devil," he muttered.
He tapped the speakerphone icon. "Report."
"Mr. Vale," Marcus’s voice came through, tense and clipped. "We decrypted the package recovered from the service entrance. It wasn't a bomb. It was a physical delivery. Inside was a ledger... and a set of keys."
"Keys to what?" Alexander demanded.
"Keys to a commercial warehouse down at the South Street Seaport. A warehouse registered under your former chief financial officer's name—the one who mysteriously vanished three years ago during the federal audit."

Alexander’s breath caught in his throat. "Julian Vance."
"Not just Julian Vance, sir," Marcus continued grimly. "The ledger inside details every single asset transfer from your company during the hostile takeover attempt. And on the cover page, handwritten in ink, is a single sentence: 'The game has just begun, Alexander. Come claim what's left of your family.'"
