Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of VanceWithin forty-eight hours, the dismantling of Ryan Vance’s carefully curated illusion was executed with surgical, terrifying precision.

By sunrise the next morning, the financial markets had reacted to the sudden recall of Sterling-backed credit lines. Headlines across Wall Street and the financial dailies flashed with breaking alerts: Sterling Global Syndicate Pulls All Backing from Vance Enterprises; Assets Frozen Amid Allegations of Corporate Fraud.

Ryan sat in the sterile, fluorescent-lit conference room of his downtown office building, staring blankly at a laptop screen that refused to load his corporate bank accounts. Every single login yielded the same chilling notification: ACCOUNT LOCKED - PENDING FEDERAL AUDIT AND LIQUIDATION.

The heavy glass door of his executive office swung open without a knock.

It wasn't his secretary. It was two federal marshals accompanied by a court-appointed receiver.

“Mr. Ryan Vance?” the lead marshal asked, holding out a sheaf of papers. “You are being served with a federal subpoena regarding corporate embezzlement, misappropriation of non-profit foundation funds, and emergency asset seizure orders filed on behalf of Sterling Holdings.”

“There’s a mistake!” Ryan screamed, leaping to his feet, his tailored suit now wrinkled and disheveled from sleeping on his office couch. “I’m a majority stakeholder! I have rights! Call my attorneys!”

“Your attorneys resigned thirty minutes ago, Mr. Vance,” the receiver said flatly, dropping a cardboard box onto his mahogany desk. “You have ten minutes to clear your personal belongings from the premises. The building and its contents have been seized.”

As Ryan was being escorted out the glass doors of his own skyscraper past rows of whispering employees and reporters flashing camera bulbs, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket.

With shaking hands, he pulled it out. It was Madison.

He swiped to answer, hoping against hope that she was waiting for him with some plan, some escape route.

“Madison? Where are you?” Ryan panted as security pushed him toward the revolving doors.

“Don't ‘Madison’ me, you pathetic loser!” her voice shrieked through the speaker, harsh and venomous. “Your credit cards are declined, your name is all over the news, and the boutique hotel management just called because your account was flagged for fraud! Don't you dare come near me, and don't you dare call this number again!”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Ryan staggered out onto the concrete pavement of downtown Chicago, surrounded by flashing cameras, microphone booms, and the cold reality of a man who had traded an empire for a lie. He had nothing. No money, no home, no mistress, and no future.
