Chapter 5 - Justice and RedemptionThree months later, the federal district courtroom in downtown Chicago was quiet save for the rhythmic clicking of the court stenographer’s machine.

Judge Sarah Sterling—no relation to Arthur, but a magistrate known for her unyielding adherence to the law—sat behind the high mahogany bench, her expression stern as she looked down at the defendant standing before her.
Ryan Vance stood at the defense table, his hands cuffed lightly in front of him, flanked by a public defender who looked equally exhausted.
“Mr. Vance,” Judge Sterling said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You have been found guilty on three counts of corporate wire fraud, embezzlement of non-profit foundation funds, and interstate financial manipulation. The scope of your deception, combined with the predatory nature of your asset diversion, leaves this court with very little leniency.”
Ryan swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the gallery.
In the front row, sitting beside Arthur Sterling, sat Emily. She wasn't smiling with malice or gloating. She simply looked at Ryan with profound indifference—the ultimate insult for a man who had craved attention above all else.
“In light of the recommendations from the federal prosecutor and the complete restitution of stolen assets recovered by Sterling Holdings,” Judge Sterling continued, “this court sentences Ryan Vance to twelve years in federal penitentiary, with no eligibility for parole for the first eight years.”
Gavel crash.
The sound echoed like a gunshot.

The federal marshals stepped forward, gently taking Ryan by the arms. As they turned him toward the holding cells, Ryan caught Emily’s eye one last time. He opened his mouth as if to beg for mercy, but the words died in his throat.
Emily didn't blink. She turned her head away, linking her arm through her father’s, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, warm sunlight of a new afternoon.
