Chapter 3 - The Gathering ShadowsTwo weeks after the collapse of Vance Enterprises, the quiet of the Sterling estate was interrupted by a desperate visitor at the outer security gates.

Arthur Sterling sat in his private study, reviewing international trade portfolios, when his head of security, Marcus, knocked twice and stepped inside.
“Sir, we have an uninvited guest at the perimeter gate,” Marcus reported, his face grim. “It’s Ryan Vance’s mother, Eleanor. She’s demanding to see Miss Emily.”
Arthur didn't look up from his tablet. “Eleanor Vance? The same woman who spent three years looking down her nose at Emily at charity luncheons, commenting on her ‘modest upbringing’?”
“The very same, sir,” Marcus replied. “She looks like she hasn't slept in a week. Shall I have her removed?”
“No,” Arthur said slowly, a cold, calculated light dancing in his dark eyes. “Let her in. But bring her to the conservatory. Let her see what true wealth looks like before she begs for crumbs.”
Ten minutes later, Eleanor Vance was escorted into the sun-drenched glass conservatory of the Sterling mansion. She looked a shadow of her former haughty self; her designer Chanel suit was dusty, her hair unstyled, and her eyes red-rimmed from crying.
When Emily walked into the conservatory, wearing a pristine white silk dress with her hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders, Eleanor instinctively opened her mouth to sneer—then caught herself, her expression twisting into a pathetic, trembling mask of supplication.
“Emily... oh, thank God,” Eleanor gasped, rushing forward and trying to take Emily’s hands.
Emily stepped back gracefully, keeping her distance. Her gaze was as cold as winter frost.
“Don’t touch me, Eleanor,” Emily said quietly.
Eleanor recoiled as if slapped. “Emily, please! I know Ryan was a fool—I told him a thousand times not to get mixed up with that Madison creature! But you were his wife! You can’t just let your father destroy our family legacy over a marital dispute!”
“Family legacy?” Emily repeated, her voice dripping with quiet sarcasm. “Eleanor, your family legacy consisted of living off my father’s venture capital while your son humiliated me in public, brought his pregnant mistress into our home, and used a riding crop on my back.”
Eleanor gasped, covering her mouth with her trembling hand. “He... he what?”
“Oh, don’t act surprised,” Emily said, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with quiet fury. “You knew who Ryan was. You raised him to believe that women were disposable props. You sat at my dining table and laughed when your son made snide remarks about my background, knowing damn well that every single luxury you enjoyed was paid for by the very father you now call a monster.”
“We’re ruined, Emily!” Eleanor sobbed openly, sinking onto a wrought-iron garden bench. “Our home has been foreclosed by the bank! Our bank accounts are frozen! We have nothing left!”

“Good,” Emily said simply. “Now you know what it feels like to have nothing taken away by people who think they are better than everyone else.”
Before Eleanor could beg further, two security guards flanked her sides, gently but firmly lifting her to her feet and escorting her out of the estate without a backward glance.
