CHAPTER 1 — The Nursery (Short Version)

At 3:07 AM, I followed the sound of my newborn grandson crying into the nursery.
Inside, I found my daughter Mia on her knees, reaching helplessly toward the crib while her husband, Caleb Voss, stood over her.
“Let him cry,” Caleb said coldly. “Maybe next time you’ll think before ruining my dinner.”
Mia begged softly, “He’s hungry.”
But Caleb refused. “He can wait.”
I stayed in the doorway and started recording.
When Caleb saw me, his entire attitude changed—calm, polite, controlled.
“Eleanor, this isn’t what it looks like,” he said.
I walked in, picked up the baby, and said, “It looks exactly like what I’m seeing.”
Caleb insisted it was just “new parent stress” and tried to dismiss it. Then he ordered me to delete the recording.
I refused.
He reminded me I was only a guest in his house and warned me not to start something I couldn’t finish.
Mia stayed silent, afraid to speak.
I held the baby and calmly told Caleb:
May you like
“You have no idea what I can afford.”
And for the first time, his confidence flickered.
