CHAPTER 2 — Control Starts to Crack (Short Version)

After I spoke, the room fell into an uneasy silence.

Mia stood frozen, still afraid to look at Caleb.

Caleb quickly regained his composure and smiled. “Eleanor, you’re exaggerating. Babies cry. This is normal.”

But Mia flinched at his words.

I asked her softly, “Is this normal to you?”

She didn’t answer.

That silence told me everything.

Caleb stepped closer and demanded I hand him the baby.

I refused.

He reminded me I was just a guest in his house and warned me not to “start something I couldn’t finish.”

Then Mia whispered, “Mom… don’t make him mad.”

That changed everything.

I held Noah tighter and said calmly, “I recognize fear when I see it.”

Caleb threatened consequences if I used the recording.
