Chapter 2 - The Alliance in the Shadows

The sun rose over the Chicago skyline, casting a pale gold light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private hospital suite. Alex had stayed by my side the entire night, refusing to leave even when his assistants called with urgent market updates.

By mid-morning, the room had been transformed into a secure, high-tech command center. Two imposing, armed security guards stood watch outside the door, while Alex’s personal legal team and financial investigators sat around a small conference table in the corner of the suite.

"Clara," Alex said, walking over with a cup of warm herbal tea. "This is Marcus Vance. He is the head of my private forensic accounting firm. If Richard has a single hidden cent, Marcus will find it."

Marcus, a sharp-eyed man in a gray suit, nodded respectfully to me. "It’s an honor, Mrs. Evans. We’ve already begun digging into the Evans Group’s financial architecture. What we’ve found so far is... disturbing, to say the least."

"What do you mean?" I asked, sitting up slightly as Alex placed a supportive pillow behind my back.

Marcus pulled up a complex digital flowchart on his tablet, displaying a web of interconnected corporate entities.

"Your husband’s primary development firm, Evans Global, has been bleeding cash for the past three years," Marcus explained. "To keep the company afloat and maintain his billionaire lifestyle, Richard has been utilizing a highly illegal offshore network. Specifically, we’ve identified three major shell companies registered in Delaware and the Cayman Islands."

"He’s been using these shells to siphon money from Evans Global's public investors, transferring the cash offshore before overvaluing his local properties to cover the missing balances," Marcus continued. "But here is the most critical piece: the primary managing partner registered on the Delaware shell, AeroGlobal, is you, Clara."

My breath caught in my throat. "Me? I’ve never signed a single corporate document for a logistics company. I don't even know what AeroGlobal is!"

"We know," Alex said, his hand closing over mine, his grip warm and steady. "Richard forged your signature, Clara. He set you up as the fall guy. If the federal authorities ever audited Evans Global, the entire paper trail of fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement would lead straight to you. You would have gone to prison, while he and Vanessa fled the country with fifty million dollars."

The sheer scale of the betrayal made me feel dizzy. Richard hadn't just cheated on me; he had spent years meticulously preparing to destroy my life, my freedom, and my child's future to save himself from his own financial ruin.

"That's why he didn't care if the baby died last night," I whispered, the realization settling like ice in my veins. "If I had a miscarriage and suffered medical complications, he could have claimed I was mentally unstable, taken full control of my estate, and executed the final transfer of funds without me ever knowing."

"Exactly," Alex nodded, his jaw clenching. "But he made one fatal mistake. He forgot that I was still watching."

"What's our next move?" I asked, looking at the legal team. "If we go to the police right now with the assault from last night, will they arrest him?"

"The police are already investigating the incident at the hotel," Marcus said. "But Richard has a highly paid public relations team. They’ve already released a statement claiming you slipped on a wet floor and that Vanessa was merely trying to catch you. Because the ballroom was crowded and the lighting was dim, they are trying to muddy the waters. If we rely solely on the assault charge, Richard's lawyers will tie it up in court for years."

"Then we don't just rely on the assault," I said, a cold, sharp determination replacing my fear. "We use his own financial trap against him. If he forged my signature on those Delaware files, then legally, as the primary managing partner of AeroGlobal, I have full access to those accounts, don't I?"

Marcus’s eyes lit up with a brilliant, appreciative spark. "Legally, yes. Since the company is registered under your social security number and forged signature, you have the right to request a full audit and freeze the assets immediately."

"Do it," I ordered, looking at Alex. "Freeze every single dollar in AeroGlobal. Let’s see how long Richard can maintain his perfect, wealthy facade when his offshore lifeline is completely cut off."

Alex smiled—a slow, dangerous, and incredibly proud expression. He leaned down and kissed my temple.

"That’s my girl," he whispered. "Let’s turn his world upside down."
