Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Confrontation

The atmosphere inside the private chambers of Judge Evelyn Reyes was thick with tension.

Richard sat at the long mahogany table, dressed in his usual pristine suit, though his tie was slightly crooked and his eyes carried a frantic, sleepless glaze. Vanessa sat beside him, wearing a conservative, dark blue dress in a pathetic attempt to look respectable, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Their lead attorney, a notorious high-priced corporate fixer named Harold Vance, looked confidently at his notes.

The door to the chambers opened, and Alex pushed my wheelchair inside.

I was dressed in a simple, elegant dark blue maternity dress, my hair pulled back into a neat, professional bun. Despite the physical exhaustion, my posture was straight, my chin held high. Two private medical officers stood behind my chair, ensuring my vitals remained stable.

Richard’s head snapped toward me, his eyes widening in a mixture of anger and relief. "Clara! Thank God you're here. You need to tell these people to stop this nonsense. You’re not well, darling. The stress of the pregnancy has—"

"Silence, Mr. Evans," Judge Reyes said, her voice a sharp gavel strike that echoed off the oak-paneled walls. She sat behind her desk, looking at the documents before her with a look of profound, icy disapproval. "This is a formal judicial hearing. You will speak only when addressed."

Harold Vance stood up, adjusting his glasses. "Your Honor, my client’s petition is born out of deep concern for his wife’s mental stability and the safety of their unborn child. Mrs. Evans has displayed erratic behavior, culminating in a violent public scene at the Grand Imperial Hotel where she suffered a severe fall. She has since cut off all contact with her husband and has illegally frozen corporate assets—"

"The assets of AeroGlobal Logistics, Mr. Vance?" I interrupted, my voice calm, clear, and perfectly steady.

"Yes, Mrs. Evans," Vance sneered. "Those funds are critical to Evans Global's ongoing operations. Your interference is causing immense financial damage—"

"The funds belong to a shell company registered entirely in my name, using my social security number," I said, looking directly at the judge. "Your Honor, I have submitted to this court a comprehensive forensic audit of AeroGlobal, conducted by Vance Forensic Accounting. Along with it, we have submitted three independent handwriting analyses of the original corporate registry documents."

I paused, looking at Richard, whose face was rapidly turning an alarming shade of gray.

"All three experts have confirmed that the signatures on those documents are highly sophisticated forgeries," I continued. "Forgeries executed by my husband, Richard Evans, to utilize my identity as a shield for a multi-million-dollar customs fraud and tax evasion scheme involving unregulated factories in Jakarta."

"This is a lie!" Vanessa suddenly shrieked, jumping to her feet. "She’s fabricating this! She’s trying to steal Richard's money because she knows he’s leaving her!"

"Sit down, Ms. Moore!" Judge Reyes barked, her eyes flashing with anger. "One more outburst from you, and I will have you removed and charged with contempt."

Vanessa sank back into her chair, her face twisting into a mask of pure, bitter hatred.

"Your Honor," Harold Vance stammered, his confident demeanor rapidly evaporating. "These financial allegations are entirely separate from the custody and mental health petition—"

"They are directly connected, Mr. Vance," Alex said, stepping forward. He placed a thick leather binder on the judge’s desk. "Inside this folder are the medical records from Northwestern Memorial Hospital. They confirm that Mrs. Evans’s 'fall' at the gala was not a slip, but a direct, physical assault. We have submitted the statements of six independent witnesses who saw Vanessa Moore intentionally strike Mrs. Evans’s pregnant belly with her stiletto, while Richard Evans stood by and refused to offer medical assistance."

The silence in the room was absolute. Richard looked as if he were about to throw up.

"Furthermore," Alex continued, his voice a low, lethal purr, "we have submitted the digital audio recordings recovered from the hotel's terrace security system. They carry Mr. Evans’s direct quote from the night of the assault: 'If that brat dies today, it saves me a messy divorce.'"

Judge Reyes closed the folder slowly. She looked up at Richard, her expression so cold it could have frozen water.

"Mr. Evans," the judge said, her voice trembling with a controlled, judicial fury. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen a display of such profound, monstrous depravity. Not only is your petition for guardianship and psychiatric evaluation denied, but I am issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order against both you and Ms. Moore."

She turned to her clerk.

"Notify the State’s Attorney and the FBI's white-collar crime division. I am turning over all financial and medical evidence submitted today for immediate criminal prosecution. Mr. Evans, Ms. Moore... I suggest you find yourself some very good criminal lawyers. You are going to need them."
