Chapter 3 - The Price of Treason

The news of the frozen AeroGlobal accounts hit Richard’s camp like a high-altitude missile.

By the next afternoon, my phone was buzzing incessantly with frantic calls and messages from Richard’s legal team, his personal assistants, and finally, Richard himself. I ignored them all, letting the digital records of his desperate attempts to contact me pile up as evidence of his panic.

Inside the hospital suite, Dr. Aris performed another ultrasound. The image of my baby girl appeared on the screen—a tiny, perfect form curled safely within my womb. Her heartbeat was strong, steady, and loud.

"She’s doing beautifully, Clara," Dr. Aris smiled, wiping the warm gel from my stomach. "The placental tear is healing perfectly. Your rest is paying off. But remember, no stress."

"I’m not stressed, Doctor," I said, looking at the window. "I’m focused."

The door opened, and Alex walked in, holding a sleek black laptop. "Marcus just intercepted a series of frantic emails between Richard and his primary lender in Zurich. Because we froze the twelve million dollars in AeroGlobal, Richard’s payment on his thirty-million-dollar construction loan bounced this morning."

"What does that mean for his company?" I asked.

"It means the dominos are starting to fall," Alex explained, sitting on the edge of my bed. "The Zurich bank has issued a formal warning. If he doesn't post the collateral by Friday, they will initiate a hostile foreclosure on his flagship development project, the Evans Tower on Michigan Avenue."

"He must be desperate," I murmured.

"He is," Alex said. "Which is why he just did exactly what I predicted he would do."

He turned the laptop screen toward me, displaying a newly filed legal petition in the Cook County Family Court.

"Richard’s attorneys just filed an emergency petition for divorce and temporary guardianship of your unborn child," Alex revealed, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "They are claiming that you have suffered a severe, pregnancy-induced psychological breakdown, that you are self-harming—citing the 'slip and fall' at the gala—and that you are unfit to make decisions for yourself or the baby. They are asking the court to remand you to a private psychiatric facility for observation."

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "He really is a monster. He wants to lock me away in an asylum so he can force my legal representative to sign over the AeroGlobal funds."

"He’s going to try," Alex agreed, his eyes flashing with a cold, protective fire. "But he’s forgot that the family court judge assigned to this petition is a close colleague of my legal foundation. I’ve already submitted the independent medical reports from Dr. Aris and Northwestern Memorial, along with the forensic handwriting analysis proving his forgery of your signature."

"And the court's response?"

"The judge has scheduled an emergency, closed-door hearing for tomorrow morning," Alex said. "Richard and Vanessa think they are going to walk into that courtroom and have you declared incompetent. Instead, they are walking straight into a legal slaughterhouse."

"I want to be there, Alex," I said, looking him dead in the eye.

"Clara, the doctor said absolute bed rest—"

"I will sit in a wheelchair, and I will have a medical escort," I interrupted, grabbing his hand. "But I need to see his face when he realizes his empire is gone. I need to look him in the eye when I take my life back."

Alex stared at me for a long moment, searching my face. He saw the fire that Richard had tried so hard to extinguish, the strength that had kept me alive through years of silent abuse.

"Okay," Alex whispered, his hand gently cupping my cheek. "We’ll go together. And I’ll be standing right behind you."
